Long story short I picked up some RS' this winter to somewhat "redo"... They were originally 17's however a previous owner used JustMatz in the UK to put together a "step up" kit to 18's...
Now the fun part... a different owner managed to crack 3 of the 4 barrels giving me the opportunity to pick these up on the cheap and put them back together. I reached out to a supplier for the new barrels, got them the specs on the faces, and roughly a month later I had the new barrels in hand.
At the same time I was having a buddy of mine powdercoat the faces "Sun Gold" to add my own flavor to the wheels. With the faces being gone for PC I matched the new barrels up with the old lips to make sure all the bolt holes aligned correctly, and they did.
I got the faces back yesterday and when I went to test fit everything together the face doesnt fully drop into the new barrels... it's just slightly off. I first thougth it was the powdercoat however the face fits into the old barrels perfectly....
Being that the old barrels work and the new barrels were just slightly off i matched to two together to get an idea of how much I was "off". The difference is maybe the thickness of a few pieces of paper but is just enough to prevent the wheel face from dropping in.
Thus I need a solution and have come up with the following:
- Freeze each wheel face overnight allowing the faces to contract just enough to then drop into the barrels for a "snug" fit (powdercoat guy says this is fine for the PC and wont harm anything).
- Bake the barrels at 250 degrees for maybe 20 minutes to hopefully allow me to push the face into place (not to keen on this one).
- Mock barrel to barrel using some extra RS bolts I have and then sand down the extra material as needed to allow the face to drop in. I would be able to use the original barrels (which work) as a guide.
Any other suggestions are welcome and if anyone has any experience please feel free to voice what you have.
Thanks in advance!!
