  • Stretched tires+winter?

    Hello,

I am running a 225/40 tire on a 9.5 wheel and a 235/40 tire on a 10.5 wheel. I had these installed two weeks ago. (brand new tires up front/brand new wheels all around) the rear tires were used but have 90% tread.

After I had them installed the car sat for a week. I checked the air pressure all around and the front right tire was at 34.5 PSI the rest were around 38. Its cold outside and in the garage it gets cold.

I had all the tires filled back up to 40 psi Sunday and this week I drove everyday. Tuesday I checked again and the right front/rear tires were at 37.5 PSI while the left side was at 38 PSI. I checked again today and the right side in the morning was at 34.5 and the left side was at 35.5. After driving around the right side was at 36 PSI and the left side was at 38 PSI.

My question is do you guys think I have a slow leak all around or is it just losing air because of the cold weather? It was 18 degrees and the car sat outside for a 4-6 hours in the early morning hours. The gauge I use is a digital gauge the TPMS in my car no longer works LOL, the gauge is a little faulty and sometimes lets a bit of air out before you get a actual reading.

I see some guys running stretched tires at 32 PSI some at 35 PSI but I heard 40 PSI is ideal. Should I just fill up every week or should I get them remounted?

    Thanks for any info!

Depends on your wheels more so than tires. I ran 205-45 on a 9.5 in the winter with no issue at all. Psi can chage with temp but I wouldn't think it'd be that drastic. If your wheels are two or three piece you could have a leak in them or you could have valve stem leaks too. As odd as it seems I've never seen a stretched tire leak around the bead it's going to seal the same stretched or not so I doubt that's the issue. I usuall run 30psi on my stretched tires and they've been fine but keep an eye on them because it can be hard to tell when there low, I was running like 12psi once and didn't notice until I saw a nail in my tread.
