  • Problem with stretched tire leaking air :/

I have some wheels that are 9.5 and 10.5. I have 225/40 tires on the 9.5 and 235/40 tires on the 10.5. The tires are Nitto and Bridgestone. The wheels are brand new.

I went to a shady shop to get the tires mounted and the guy barely spoke English. The way they were installing the stretched tires was horrifying, my first time getting them installed, I am new to the stance scene but I know nothing about the shop was profesional. However my friends who run stretched tires use this guy all the time.

Anyway I got them on and brought them back to my car and heard air whizzing out of a tire. The 225/40 was was leaking where the lip meets the tire, so it was leaking from the bead.

I took the wheel back inside, he dismounted it and applied sealant everywhere put the tire on and dunked it in water.....we could see it was still leaking. He did this 3 more times each time reapplying sealant but it kept leaking, by this time his wife was annoyed and wanted me gone but the 4th time seemed to be the charm. It was no longer leaking air. I got them home and put them in my basement, (3 weeks later) yesterday I got my new center caps and was bouncing it up and down because it felt like it lost some air. This morning all the air was gone and it was basically flat.

Do you guys think the guy ripped the bead the first time he mounted the tire? Is it worth taking to another shop and having them unmount/reapply sealant?

I was thinking of taking it to another shop and having them remove all the gunk/apply new sealent but I can't find any shop in Westchester NY that will install stretched tires. I don't want to go back to the original guy because that area was horrible and I bottomed out twice because of the shitty roads.

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

what sort of wheel, and what method did he use to mount the tire? i'll give you two scenarios i've personally had happen to me

    1. on my bbs rm's, i had my buddy install them for me as i didn't have my steel toes with me that day. and two of my four wheels were leaking (10.5, 9" with 205/50/15's) i tried everything, and eventually found where they were leaking from. i got pissed and stopped running the wheels. when i removed the tire from the rim to rebuild the wheels again, i noticed what happenned. when he used the bead blaster, or "cheeta cannon" or wtv, he blasted off my silicon seal betweel the barrel and lip. so there was about a 5" gap on two wheels missing any sealant. i was extremely pissed.

    2. when i was running 9 & 9.5's, i had one wheel that always leaked. i was running 195/45/15 nexxens. it always leaked around the outside bead. even after using bead sealer, and stuff it still leaked. i even removed the tire myself, inspected both the tire and the rim (to find zero faults or marks) and when i re installed, they leaked again. i got fed up, and picked up some 205/50 falken azenis and mounted those up, and after a few thousand km they didn't leak in the slightest. not sure why that one tire leaked, as it was installed on different set of wheels, and it held air pefrectly fine.

I don't know enough on mounting tyres etc to help on that.

But I did take my wheels to a dodgy back street tyre garage place...long story short, wheels got scratched around the lip badly...they accepted no liability.

Lesson learnt, spend the extra money and get it done somewhere more professional.

I dunno what he told you, but there is no such thing as "sealant" unles its urethane or something, which is ridiculous.

It sounds like the bead of the tire was damaged.

Tires mount on the outter edges of the wheel, and stretching them doesnt affect how the "bead" of the tire sits on the outter edge of the wheel.

The tire sizes you're running arent even that extreme... Without looking at it, thats my theory. If it were in person, we'd be able to tell you what your problem is. Doesn't help when you yourself dont know what your looking at. Not having a dig at you in any way, just sayin'.

The beads ripped, no question. I just dealt with a company who ripped mine. Got them to pay for a new tire.

If you store newly mounted tires instead of driving on them immediately (heating them up) it's not uncommon for them to lose seal around the bead.
