  • Smaller studs into bigger holes in wheels?

    I have some Audi wheels I want to fit which take M14x1.5 studs/lugs. The adapters I have are for Merc fitment have M12x1.5 studs.. Well obviously they fit but would they be safe?

    I can't trial fit them tightly because there's a wheel-centric part on the adapter with a bigger bore size than my wheel, so I'd have to machine that off first. I'm asking the question first as there may be no point removing the current studs.

    Otherwise I'll have to change the studs over and find some press in ones, but that brings about another question to whether or not M14x1.5 studs can fit in the same holes?

        They also make 12mm to 14mm stud conversions.

          my fronts are m12 studs my wheels are m14 i don't feel safe. have your adapters redrilled and put some m14 studs in there cheap, easy, simple.

          build thread?

            Thanks for the responses guys;

            After some research I found there's 2 main arguments here.

            1. Some say that the wheel is held on to the adapter by friction, so there is actually no force on the hub or studs. As long as you have the correct seat lug nuts then those will provide enough force to hold the wheel onto the adapters. Stud diameter doesn't matter.

            2. Others say forces are directly applied to the hub and studs. So if your studs are smaller than the holes in the wheels then they will be loose and you'll have movement/vibrations.

            I seem to side with #1..

              make sure they are torqued to spec and they will be fine

              for every person who wants to get all anal about the right sized studs and hub centric and everything. there is a mexican doing 100mph down the highway in a F150 on 14in wires with 2 lugs holding each wheel on no problems.

                I about died reading that.

                OP, you should be fine. Proper torque is key though.
