Extreme Stretch question.

Hey everyone, new guy here from manila philippines

Moving on. So i acquired a new set of rims for my project crown(1980)problem is im having a hard time finding the right set of tires for them because they are really wide,anyway, the specs are the FF

Imperi Genesis

Rear:
18x13
295/40/18

Front
18x11.5
265/35/18


now heres the question, im fairly knowledgeable and acquainted with stretched tires BUT i usually do them on 15's (195/50 on 10" , 9" . 225/50 on 11" 12") however, when it comes to 18's im really having a hard time picturing the outcome because theres a wide array of profiles and widths of tires that you can use for 18's.

i have a pair of tire options that are on my "It-may-stretch-nicely" list. here they are.

265/35/18
255/45/18

Both of the tire's brand will be toyo. now, i have thought of just buying a set of wide tires but its too expensive (400$ per piece) so im stuck with the narrower option and it looks better IMHO

Any help/suggestion will be super appreciated good sirs.

honestly? . . 18's on a 80's crown? . . I don't think there's any tire that makes this combination good looking . . on a car like that cool retro looking 15's or 16's are they way to go . . just my 2c

I guess i'll just have to wait and see , i honestly dont know how it will turn out just yet because its still a WIP but i am liking what i am seeing, ofcourse i have my biases , will see the car this sunday, hopefully. i deviated from the usual set of wheels and decided to go a bit modern on this one, its really a gamble but i easily got tired of the good old nostalgic look (Retro car with 14-16 rims) but hey, what the heck right.

I did sir but i think the info on the 245/35 on 19x13 is not accurate, i think he measured the rims from lip to lip (correct me if im wrong), not enough stretch and i think its not humanly possible to stretch too narrow a tire on that kind of width.these are just my observations, id be more than glad to be proven wrong

Thanks for the feedback, i already thought of putting 15 or 16 because its the proper wheel size for this kind of car but coming across a set of em is kind of hard back here in manila, i cant even find something decent that is above 7" soo the retard in me opted for the 18x13.

To mask the enormous wheels i had them painted black, the fenders were also cut and the final touch would be putting stretched tires on them. i expected the disgust and disapproval of many, even of my own brother(who is strongly against it), but i decided to push through.

honestly when i first tried the set on i was enveloped in regret, disappointment and a longing for a set of smaller wheels BUT after a week when the fenders were cut, and the car was lowered a little bit, i was satisfied and actually quite happy with it(but then ofcourse im bias cause its my car ), im hoping i can prove you wrong with the final product sirs, cheers

Oh, and going back, do you think the tires that i listed in my first post will stretch on the 18x13 without exposing the barrel of the wheels?

I actually feel the opposite from everyone here, I think the VIP-style fitment of stretched 18"s with huge dish will work well on an older classy car like a Crown. Just the teaser pics above make it look great!

I think you'll have great results with the 255/45s up front, and the 265/35s out back. I'd be very interested to see the end result, but I really like what I see so far. Its' different in that everyone wants to go classic small/wide and low, but nobody pulls off VIP with vintage steel anymore.

Thanks for the vote of confidence mate, yep i wanted to do a vip on some good old japanese vintage steel because no one seems to be doing them specially on this particular model of the crown, i personally fell inlove with the car because of its lines and the sheer size of the car(its huge) so i thought hey why not, lets do some vintage vip, its a huge gamble that i hope will pay off. if it doesnt fly, i can easily change the wheels to something more conservative and classic. will update as soon as its done.

^ you are doing it the right way by radiusing the fenders higher and also looking at overfenders. check out some vip forums as well because those guys will have more experience in this regard.

the way to get low on big wide wheels is to radius as well as widen the body.

A 285/30/18 or 295/30/18 would be my suggestion for the rears.
Anything over 275width on an 18, I personally would go with a 30 series profile. I'd agree that 15/16's would be more "period correct" but I'm amazed those fit as well as they do, excited for the outcome.

Hey man, saw the car today and i must say im pretty satisfied with the results, sits right and looks right, without being on the "Dubs" side, if you catch my drift. yep, those sizes are more period correct but i wanted to deviate from the norm, just went half-retard on this one . ill post pics of the supra and the crown tom on the build section once i get the car rolling tomorrow evening, cheers.
