  • Lame newb question about spacers and lugs...

    aight.
    So e39 + style 95's
Had to cop some 74.1 to 72.6 spacers/ adapters to fit my wheels because of my e39's oddball hubsize.

The spacers that i've ordered are 12mm and 16mm, which are some wack ass sizes (they were cheap. i am poor.)

The stock lug bolts on an e39 are 25 mm, so for these spacers ideally id need 41mm and 37mm bolts.

Here's my question: If i get a set of 40mm bolts, will they be okay to run with these spacers? My research seems to indicate yes but I'm worried mainly about the 12mm spacers, if I get bolts that are 3mm to long will they not seat properly on the wheel?
Would it be better to get ones that are too short as opposed to too long (35mm bolts for the 12's maybe?)

I want to do things right so id like a "yeah kid, you'll be fine" or a "no you're straight stupid, kid." or two before I order some bolts.

Wound it not be cheaper to have the centerbore drilled out to the right size?

Maybe, I'm looking at 110 total once i order bolts, so I wouldn't save a ton of money by having them bored.
The main reasons why i went this route is that i feel like drilling the bores will hurt the resale value of the wheel a lot and I would be running spacers even if I got them drilled.

Just buy rings for 3 $ and put in when you sell them. Good thing when selling is that they will fit more cars. Any how its not a very rare wheel you have so i dont think it would be a problem.

I don't know, drilling my nice wheels just would feel wrong man. Once i do it I cant reverse it.
And even if I got them drilled for 20$ a wheel it would come out to the same amount of money I'm spending now, and then I would still have to buy spacers. In the end this is more cost effective.

Does anybody have any input on my bolt question? I'm about to order ten 40mm bolts and ten 35...

i used studs/nuts when i had spacers on

these 80mm ones were about right with 35mm of spacers

Yeah, I've been looking at studs a bit but was turned off of them because kits are like at least 140 dollars from all the usual places (fuck you bmw tax). Didn't realize they were so cheap on ebay, so much thanks for the heads up. It'll still end up being more expensive than bolts and I'm not sure I'm going to be a fan of the racecar studs sticking way out look (my 5 is 0% racecar)...

But if its what I need to do to run this setup properly/safely then i'll gladly do it

to make sure i understand what your saying, i answered three questions

your wheels are 12mm and the wheel stud kits are 14mm?
just drill it out, no big deal

your worried that your new wheel bolts will be too long?
your over thinking this, 3mm? i'm willing to guess that the mounting flange of the wheel is +/- 3mm different then the stock wheel.

the center bore of the wheel does not match your hub bore?
your over thinking this, just get hubcentric rings and call it a day

                build thread?
