  • Widened steelies VW MK4.. Help!

EDIT: I originally wanted 16" widened steelies but have decided on going back to 18" wheels. Please read my latest post.

    --------------------------------------------

    Hey guys,

I'm new here so be nice!
    Currently I drive a VW Bora V6 4motion.

    Wheels:
    Miro STP-1
    Front: 18x8.5 +30 (and 5mm spacers) with 225/40/18
    Rear: 18x10 +25 (and 10mm spacers) with 235/40/18

I've got KW V1s and they're lowered all the way in the rear (doesn't go too low) as I've removed the perch and adjusters, and the fronts can go lower but for daily purposes I'd rather not. The rear naturally has some negative camber when lowered.

Since we're expecting a baby early next year I want to switch down to 16's as it's a lot smoother than my 18's. I put on the stock 16's and I'm very pleased with the ride so I'm considering widened steelies. I have a black car so I'll also paint the steelies black to hopefully disguise some wheel gap haha.

I am looking to buy some VW Beetle steelies which are already black and have the right PCD and hub bore, and widening them to be 16x8/9.

My question is what offset should I get them made? Obvs don't want to run spacers anymore, but want a similar stance to what I've got now- although I'd like a little more poke in the front and I think the back has too much poke.

Another question is what size tyres? I'd like to have 55 series tyres to keep rolling diameter similar to stock and to fill the guards a bit more as I don't mind chunky tyres.

Mk4 gurus help me out please!

you seem to have the basic specs already down

    you said you have:

    Front: 18x8.5 +30 (and 5mm spacers) with 225/40/18
    Rear: 18x10 +25 (and 10mm spacers) with 235/40/18

and you want a little more poke on the front

so for the front you could say go something like 15mm more poke? so the target width would be somewhere around 8.5" +10 or 9" +16
and for the rear you said you want less poke, so say 15mm less as you do have quite a bit of poke there. so that would be 10" +30 or 9.5" +24 or 9" +17

as for the tire and the rolling diameter, you said 16" steelies are stock on the car, so see what the recomended specs are and then can work out the rolling diameter for a 55 profile tire from there

yer pretty much what he said ^^^ offsets easy to workout, & the rolling diameter shouldnt be to hard

hmm . . even though you're new . . . you have all the datas . . how hard is it to add the numbers?

right now you have in the front:
          18x8.5 +30 (and 5mm spacers)
          - delete spacers and keep the poke: (30-5) ET +25
          - go from 8.5 to 8 wide and keep the poke: (25-7) ET +19
          - and you want more poke . . so you need less than ET+19

right now you have in the rear:
          18x10 +25 (and 10mm spacers)
          - delete spacers and keep the poke: (25-10) ET +15
          - go from 10 to 9 wide and keep the poke: (15-13) ET +2
          - and you want less poke . . so you need more than ET+2

why do you want 55 series tires? . . do you even know what that "55" means? . . so you don't care how wide the tire is as long as it's a 55? . . that doesn't make sense at all . .

Thanks guys for that. I just wasn't confident with calculating offsets and needed other input.. I don't wanna get it wrong and pay to get some wheels done and they're all wrong!

I do need help as I've got heaps to learn.. For instance I only really understood this week that brake caliper clearance was due to the style of the wheel, not offset lol. My current set of wheels was a bit of trial and error to get them to fit.. I'd rather get it right from the get go!

            So I'm looking at:
            16x8 +15
            16x9 +15
            How's that sound?

I do know what 55 means in tyre size and I really don't know why I said it, but what I mean is that I don't want low profiles.. My bad!

The S3 that inspires me has the following:
            16x8 with 205/55's
            16x9 with 225/50's

So hypothetically if I want the same poke on the rear and the tyre perfectly clears the guards currently, the 225/50/16 on a 9" wouldn't have as much stretch as a 235/40/18 on a 10" so it wouldn't clear?

So my plans have changed and I don't want steelies anymore. I was thinking of getting 18s again.

              New specs:

              18x8.75 +20 all around with 225/45/18 tyres.

The rear will have 20mm less poke than the pictures above, and the front will have 8mm more poke.

              Opinions??
