  • Stripping/Prepping wheels?

I just got a set of wheels I'm trying to fit on my E30. Problem is, they're chrome plated and the plating is chipped and bubbling. Not enough to easily chip off though. I've done some research and people are saying with oven cleaner or brake fluid the stuff should just "fall off." of course, this isn't the case.

Am I doing something wrong? I've tried covering the whole wheel in foam and waiting to see if it'll rub off. No luck. Spray and rub in, nothing. I tried a whole bunch of brake fluid and rubbing, same results. I called a few powder coating places and they said they can get it off for $200 but that's as much as a good media blaster and sand.

If I do go this route what type of media/sand should I use to rid these aluminum wheels of it's crappy chrome plating?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You are not going to get a good chrome plating off with acid-based oven cleaners or paint strippers. Maybe cheap plastic chroming, but definitely not automotive wheel chroming. Pay up, and have the guys remove the chrome the right way - reverse electrolysis plating removal...

Also, you can powder coat over chrome.
