  • Step lip vs flat lip

    Hi folks,

I will be purchasing a set of 3-piece wheels some time soon for next season and I wanted to ask the following question:

Are the step lips stronger than the regular flat lips? We are talking about spun aluminum lips for comparison.

To give specific examples: I am looking at either CCW LM5s, ISS Forged and a few others. The CCW LM5s come with stepped lip and the ISS Forged with a flat one.

Even though I drive very carefully, the roads in Chicago are pretty piss poor and I just don't want to have wheels that will not bend easily.

So which ones: stepped lip or flat lip?

    Thanks in advance.

I'm sure there are many different views on the matter. But just to start things off and in my own opinion, I don't think it really matters which is stronger. If you're on stanceworks there's probably a good chance that you and most of us are more concerned with looks over most other things. That being said, as long as you dodge the potholes, watch the curbs and restrain from driving like an *** hole you should be just fine with either or. So, in short, whatever looks better. :]

That's a good question. I'm curious too, now that you've brought it up.

My guess though is that the stepped lips are stronger. Only reason I'm guessing that is because the majority of multi-piece wheels used in high stress applications (like racing) are stepped lip.
