  • barrel on barrel

hey guys, working on new wheels for my e21. theyre going to be wiiide.

i mocked up 2 barrels together instead of barrel + lip

now. a friend tells me he was told its near impossible to mount a tyre without damaging the wheel like this.

i had a search and found some info on flat face wheels needing to be split for the tyre to be mounted, but the pics showed NO drop in the wheel, whereas mine have a small drop in the middle of the wheel, as opposed to the drop being nearer the wheel edge like so(wheel at the front of pic)

so the question is, has my friend been told an exaggerated story, and its easily possible, or am i better off just spending the $$ on the proper lips.

what sort of damage is possible if its hard to mount tyres? scraped edges, bending, etc? scrapes i can deal with, the cars no show pony

if i have to go proper lips i will, but if i can save a couple $ and use barrels, id prefer that way.

Generally wheels that have no drop have rubber/aluminum gasket seals, not chemical adhesive.

      i.e. something like this:

While it probably could be done, I personally wouldn't want to try and get them sealed effectively.

well mine have a small drop, plenty enough to seal with an adhesive, but i was told trying to mount a tyre after theyre bolted up is near impossible.

i may end up just assembling one wheel dry(before paint/polish/etc) and dropping it off to my tyre bloke and seeing if he can mount the tyre. if not, no loss, ill buy some lips, if he can, i can just seal them up and let him have at them

You would need to assemble it with the tire in place, making proper application of sealant difficult, thus the need for a rubber seal

Theres no issues with that, theres still plenty of drop to get the tire over the wheel. The potential damage would be to the tires anyways, not to the wheels.

well, I can't help a lot, but I can advertise you to one little thing...

many times, the problem is not to mount the tyre, is to taking it off without damaging it (the tyre, not the wheel)... if it happens, you may take the risk that could not be able to use the tyre again, specially on stretch use...

Yeah but the nice part is you'll be able to do a crazyyyyy stretch on that because of the flat barrels

Edit: If the wheel on the left is what the wheel looks like with 2 barrels you'll have no problem.
