  • Fittment Question: New Inner Barrels To Reduce Inner Clearance

Hey everyone, got a fitment question. I picked up a set of 17x9.5 RSs, et55, I know, they're 178s, but for the price I got them, I want to run them. My problem with making these fit is that because of the high offset my issue is inner clearance and clearing the strut/shock. Now, the 17x9.5 is not an issue for me in the rear, with a 31mm adapter, they will fit perfectly.

The front is a different issue, I calculated that for the front to fit, I have to remove an inch of the wheel to make it an 8.5. Now, again, my issue is still inner clearance, I need an inset of 144mm (willtheyfit.com) and a poke of 72mm (willtheyfit.com), same thing, I would need a 31mm adapter to gain inner clearance of the strut. If the wheel is a 9.5, to get the inset I need, the wheel is poking about 25mm past my desired poke, now, I could take the inch off of the lip area, but I have a 1" lip, so that's not really doable. If I get a smaller barrel, go from my 17x8 barrel to a 17x7 barrel, that will remove an inch of inner clearance that I would need, meaning I can run a smaller adapter to gain inner clearance of the strut, therefore, not poking the wheel out as far, and actually right to my desired poke.

Am I thinking about this right? Again, I'm not trying to change offset, I'm trying to reduce the size of the adapter needed to gain inner clearance by removing an inch off of the inner barrel.

Yes you are correct. Tho changing barrels will affect the offset.

Have you thought about just adding some camber to get the wheels back in?

Yeah, I just read the sticky. If I'm thinking about it right:

      +1" lip = -12.7mm offset
      +.5" lip = -6.35mm offset
      -.5" lip = +6.35mm offset
      -1" lip = +12.7mm offset

      +1" barrel = +12.7mm offset
      +.5" barrel = +6.35mm offset
      -.5" barrel = -6.35mm offset
      -1" barrel = -12.7mm offset
      If I have a 17x9.5 et55, reducing the barrel by 1" will give me a 17x8.5 et~42.

And I would change the camber, but I don't really have any way to do that. I don't have camber plates.

And looking at it, the new size/offset and the smallest adapter (15mm) would give me more inset and poke than I originally wanted:

But looking at the picture (my original wheel and the RS), it would easily be doable.

You are correct. And with that you can run a 25.4mm less of adapter. and get the flush look that you want, (saying that you can find such a thin adapter)

I would do a 15mm adapter from motorsport-tech. Just would have a little bit more poke, but nothing wrong with that, just would have to roll/pull the fenders a little more aggressively.

If I went with an 6.5" barrel, so a 17x8, would I subtract another 6.35mm from the offset? So, 17x8 et~35?

Actually, nevermind, plugging that into the offset calculator and smaller wheel with the larger offset would actually push it out more. lol.

if you take more of the inner barrels that wont affect anything because you cant get smaller adapters. i would still poke the same.

Cool. Thanks for the help. I was reading a lot about how changing the inner barrel won't effect the outside of the wheel, but in my case going with a slightly smaller inner barrel will help me fit the wheel.
