stripping wheels

I just picked up a set of 85 Corvette wheels and they need to the clear stripped off them. I was wondering what some of you guys used. Also need to know what size tires should i go with wheels are 16x8.5 front and 16x9.5 rear.

I usually use the spray aircraft stripper first, then I slop the goopy in a can stuff on and let it sit. Whatever that doesnt take off, I take a DA to with some 80-180 grit depending on how bad it is.

With the stripper, use a razorblade, then hose it off...

I usually go through a couple cans of the spray, and a can of the brush on type for one set of wheels.

be careful with a DA and 80 grit, you can damage the wheel if you're not careful

Unless I was getting rid of some serious damage I would start with about 240 and then progressively work up to 2000 wet, then start with a tac cloth to get rid of any dust, clean it a few times, then again with another tac cloth, and then start priming, followed by multiple light coats of paint, finished with LOADS of lacquer

First of all if this is how you would remove clear... LOL.

Second of all, why the hell would you work up to 2000 just to spray over it?

do NOT go to 2000. you will need a good key on the surface, for the paint to stick on. i would stop at 320 ~ 400.

I would stop at 400-600 as well, 320 if using a primer-sealer, 'cause it fills pretty well anyways.

But in general, start with the highest grit you can use to get the job done. 80-180 I reserve for shaping filler, or knocking/grinding down metal.

Gonna get them powder coated satin black and do the pockets car color sunburst orange, and the center around the lugs body color. as well.
