I decided to polish my Porsche 928 7 slots. When I got them they looked like this:

I was thinking the finish was brushed aluminum with a clear over it.

I got all my products from the local Canadian Tire, except for the Aircraft remover. I couldn't find this product anywhere. Instead I decided to look for another kind of paint stripper and I ended buying this product:

I put a good amount of product on one of the wheels and I let the product sit for about 15-20 minutes, then I scraped the residue with a plastic scraper. After that I rinced the wheel and hit it with 320 grit. I got it to look pretty dull, which is what I was expecting. Now after a good bit of sanding, I realise that some spots on the corners of the "slots" were shinier:

I hit that spot with mother's polish, and the shiny part came out like a mirror. The rest went unchanged. Did my paint stripper not work? This means the wheels are actually painted and not only cleared? Any tips to get the stripper to work better or do i absolutely need the Aircraft stuff to break through that tough Porsche finish?

Great thread, I have the same question since I am polishing A8 Monoblocks myself and the only refinishing experience me and my brother have were the Blitz 01 on the Corolla. I used some Wal-Mart paint stripper and it obviously didnt work..lol

And what is the factory finish on the A8 monoblocks? Something like the 928's eh?

Most silver P wheels are anodized ,those defiantly are. You need to strip them with oven cleaner or something similar nothing else will even touch it . Google it and you may find other products. The coating is very hard and will require lots of time with the oven cleaner on it . It may be a little more sanding once the product is off but there is no other option if you want to polish them. Good luck and happy sanding.... And remember polishing something is like masturbating without the climax.

Duder, go to your local airport and ask around amongst the tenants for Aircraft Paint stripper, and ask is you can buy some from them, or they can order one for you from Aviall.

Ok they are indeed anodised. I saw the stamp on the back when I got them, and I totally forgot about it until Glock mentionned it. Oven cleaner? That stuff is strong enough? Other methods to remove anodisation?

Take them to a polisher - a set of 928 wheels will ruin your life if you try to polish them at home ,
its not worth the time/effort to end up with a shit looking set of wheels.

I concur, if it has clear anodizing outsource it. That stuff is a real pain to work with.

                    I usually aircraft strip then;

180 grit, 320 grit, 400, 600, 800, 1k, 1500, 2k. Then go back and go wetsand from 400 up. Then Mothers metal polish, or flitz. Then 3m rubbing compound, then 3m swirl remover/polishing compound, then a good cleaner wax, and a good sealer wax.

I just did them BY HAND, AT HOME. Idk why you guys are getting all in a twist about it, it's not that bad.

                          Really...

Well, I polished the same exact fucking wheels he is inquiring about, with the same fucking coating on them, so I guess I havent.

It's called elbow grease, sand the shit off and dont be a pussy.

Look, I have one wheel that looks like crap now because of that anodizing that I didn't notice. I have to look from here now. I'm not scared of polishing for hours or anything. I've swapped engines in the winter and degreased all the bay by hand lol. Tell me about the easy-off method, how long do I let it on the wheel and such. I absolutely do not care if I have to sand for 10000 hours after that, I just want a nice set of wheels to put on my slammed ride.

And I see those polished all the time. Dont tell me all of these people took them to a polisher and paid the big price ton have them polished. Do paint stick to anodising? Could be a last resort...
