new member, tire stretch

Hello to you all, I'm Cade, from the OKC area.

New to the forum but I lurked alot in the past with my various hondas

I've tried searching and it's not working for some reason? I am going to run 17x8.5 all around with a 40 mm offset on my e36 sedan. bimmer guys recommend 245/40 tires, but I'm here asking what looks better. what will give me some pretty decent stretch? If I should have looked somewhere else first i'm sorry, and i'll gladly accept a link

I'm stretching 225/40 on an 18x9.5 inch rim. 245 on a 8.5 would be meaty as hell and the sidewall would come past the rim. If you are looking for a stretched tire look 245 is not stretched. Something more like 205 would be in your ballpark for some serious stretch. 205 millimeters = 8.07086614 inches so that would mean you have roughly 1/4 inch of stretch on each side. I'm no e36 expert, so if someone out there wants to correct me please do, but 205's would be a safe bet. anyone else who responds might be able to tell u their setup but definitely search the threads for e36's and see what other people are running. There are likely some 215s that would look decent (Fuzion ZRi, Falken ZE512) but generally for a 17x8.5, 205/40 is going to be where you want to be, at least.

This is a quite qide 205/40 on the right (probably nearly .5" wider than a Fuzion ZRi in the same size. Checking out TyreStretch will give you a lot of other examples.

there is no need to stretch, if you don't want it flush.
if you are gonna put a 205/40 on there, you will need a 30ish mm spacer, and low. Or else it is gonna look stupid.

thanks for the opinions i'll look into those spacers, since they're pretty affordable


actually, it would be better if i could forget the spacer and run a wider wheel. what size would you bimmer guys recommend? i am going with 17's, but how wide do you think and what offset, it needs to be daily driveable

For e36s a lot of guys run in the ballpark 17x8.5 et13 for a flush look (using a slight stretch of 215/40 or 205/40). With an offset of 40mm on your stock wheels your going to need a pretty hefty spacer to get the wheel to fit flush depending on how low you are and tire width. As far as tire stretching goes it depends on the tire. Some tires run narrower than others. Some examples of narrow tires are toyo proxies, falken 512s, fuzion zri etc (you can find others by searching). It really depends the overall look you are trying to achieve

j/king aside, those will fit without fender rolling, and there is no need to go with a stretched tire, go with a 225/40 or something like that.

Until you hit offsets above 20 you won't need any stretch on an E36 unless the wheels are like 10 inches wide.

if you're going with 8.5's then 205/45 is going to give you a respectable amount of stretch with enough meat on the wheel to where you'll probably be safe from the average little pothole. from my personal experience 40 profiles can be scary and usually don't show off too much stretch. i mean you can always run spacers to give more poke but then you get into the math with offset. 17x8.5s all the way around can look good you just have to have the right offset and spacing etc.

also the "stretch" will not look right if you don't go with the right tyre. id say its most important. 512's are always a safe bet. as where the 912's will just look bubbly and awkward.
