tips?
know what you want to keep , what you want to get rid of permanently ,and what goes where ,
which circuits are shared ( you don't want to cut your windshield washer circuit to discover it also runs your headlights...)
take your time, buy supplies before you work on the car,
label things if you are a scatterbrain ,
remember the order of your components like injectors and sensors
heat wrap, electrical tape, wire crimpers, wire cutters , a razor like the kind used to take tint off (to cut electrical tape off harnesses and wire ties),
FOLLOW the wires from component to fuse and ground .....sometimes they split and don't actually go far....but you never know
make all your final connections or cuts safe , you don't want to catch your car on fire....
a piece of cardboard under your car in case you drop things you can just slide it out...
if you can, get a manual with the electrical diagrams for your car
know your car's option trim.... some cars have extra wires just in case you ever need them and they can just clutter your bay.....
mineral spirits work great to clean oil / other stuff in case you just want to clean your engine bay and not repaint. putting it in an old spray bottle (windex or w/e) works really good and you don't waste a lot of it use a clean rag to clean the dirt or oil ..... it works good but sometimes a little dawn can do wonders, for hard to reach areas compressed air works wonders , on engine blocks carb/brake cleaner works good but you might need a lot of it , toothbrushes , or small wire brushes to work it in are awesome.
ask questions, other people might know something from experience.
look at examples of the same kind of car or similar ...
be prepared to screw up and fix it, be prepared to be clueless, be prepared to take a break and clear your head, be prepared to have your car down a good amount of time,
if your engine/car is hard to tuck or if you are overwhelmed etc , remember that cleaning polishing and painting can still go along way...and moving wires or other things to where you can't see them also counts....
i think that's all the tips i have for now.....oh and listen to music and have drinks around.. it makes it a lot better.
a secret: you don't really need high temp paint for valvecovers and other items that don't get really really hot like yor engine block ....oh and bbq and stove paint works really great on intake manifolds , piping , and heat shields.... that refrigerator epoxy stuff works good on plastics , and the cheap 99c stuff can go a long way....
if the o.p. minds this i can remove it...
edit my gf says to take her out before hand and get her stuff to keep her her entertained ,like a ball of yarn or candy...
