  • My Friend's "Noisy" E36

So one of my friends has this E36 325is that was his first car, he picked it up for $1200 at the time way back when, i don't know much about it from this period but from what he told me there were some not so minor fixes that were involved in getting it drive-able.

Next came a full paintjob, the car needed to be repainted i guess, and he was doing it himself with his dad, the car drove for a couple months all sanded and in ugly brown primer, then it finally got painted in a nice simple gloss black.

a few years later i met him on fb and we struck up a friendship because we both had E36 and lived almost next door to each other. At this point the paint was cracked and peeling because the paint that they got the first time was not at all the quality it was supposed to be, and an issue with the hardener on the clear coat caused the clear to start peeling off the car in plasticky flakes.

He knew it had to be repainted but really was not up to the task of re-doing every thing he did the first time flawlessly that was ruined with sh**Ty paint. So for quite some time the car drove in matte-black batman status as the clear coat continued to peel off..

One day something happened that turned everything arround, He picked up the car he had been hunting for the last 8 months, a pristine Estoril Bleu Metallic E36 M3. With this aquisition his dad made him promise that he would get the other E36 painted and ready to sell, and so it went back under the knife...

A couple weeks later he told me it was finished and that i "have" to see it...ok a gloss black E36 i've seen enough of those, my own E36 was gloss black, never the less i was a little intrigued...

i almost sh*t myself when i saw it for the first time

this thing sparkles like a glitter glue factory in the moonlight, and its not even wet sanded/buffed yet! And its sitting pretty on some 18" AC Schnitzer reps, stretchy tires, and hunkered down on modified springs

while editing the photo above i was a little upset because i noticed there was some camera noise in the reflections of the clouds...ruining the best shot of the photoshoot, upon zooming in i discovered that that was not noise, in fact it was just more sparkles, this shit is everywhere and i love the way the car came out

sadly the car is for sale though and anyone in the illinois area that is interested you can PM me and i will forward you to the owner

Its not bad.. Although the pictures arent noisy, nor are the metalics effecting the photos.. The clear coat is very dry and peely. It needs to be rubbed down and re-cleared quite a bit heavier to make it flatter. Depending on how much clear is already on it, it might be possible to block it back and buff it, But I wasnt there so I wouldnt know.

No doubt its a clean car, but needs work.

To add to that, The reason the metalic is so apparent would also indicate that it was layed on the car too dry. When you paint a metalic, if its too havy the metalic can seperate, when its too dry, the metal flakes in the paint land ontop of the coats almost like overspray, which indicats a number of things. Either there wasnt enough paint flowing through the gun, the gun was too far away from the panels while applying the paint or the consistency of the passes with the gun had next to no overlay.

The "orange" peel, as its called in the industry, is the reason the photos are so dull, and the reason that in person the refflections aren't very "mirror" like.

Just throwing some info out there to the future diy'ers. Paint isnt a part of any build that you cheap out on.

other than that the paint looks good, black saphire metalic? or just some black with sparkle?

              what does "hunkered down" mean?

I think getting rid of the orange peel will make things look really good.
