  • Don't want to do it....

But I might have to raise her

This summer, Ive snapped 7 empi axles and one oem one due to axle binding issues, shes sitting right around 22.25 fender to ground in this shot but I daily this car and luckily Ive been able to use a relatives car for work lately but when school comes ill be shit out of luck. Im on my last idea, Im switching to inch motor mount spacers from 5/8ths and getting another oem axle and a new tranny mount and if that doesnt fix it Im gunna raise it up.

This is part of the reason I gave up on my corrado and bought another e30.

I mean Im willing to do whatever it takes, but I have no idea how to go about doing that. There is someone on the vortex who can modify axles to make them not bind, but he will not give me his DIY and wants 200 bucks to do it plus all shipping fees, and is horrible at answering PM's/emails and I need to get this more reliable by september 1st.

Instead of spending all the money, maybe convert to bags? That way you can roll higher to eliminate the binding.

Other then that, buy a cheapy axle and experiment a bit, maybe shorten it by a half inch or so and see if it improves.

Bags were a thought but that would mean letting the car sit for awhile to save up for them, the only way I can see shortening an axle is literally cutting the shaft and rewelding it and I feel like that would take away from the integrity of the shaft and cause it to snap at the weld instead.

Alot of shafts are welded from the factory, as long as its a good weld that has proper penetration it will not loose its integrity.

Its no different that an OEM one and its still going to bind and still going to break.

EMPI axles are garbage, OEM is your only real option. The fact that 01 on Vortex charges people to modify their axles is garbage too imo. Search ryanmiller's old threads on Vortex, he made a DIY a while back I believe (way before 01 ever did this mod btw). All it consists of is taking the axle apart and grinding down the 3 "walls" in the tri-rotor thing for more clearance

naw, that's not true at all. They're built to withstand more angle and are made with beefier parts. I'm under 23" and make 300+ hp and haven't had an issue with mine. I did break 4 empi's in 3 days though and finally figured out you get what you pay for.

They're really not meant for being slammed. Raxles refuses to shorten the axle even after my friend talked to them about it for months and showed them how the angle is the problem. He destroyed multiple Raxles on his 24v and gave up with dealing with them. They're definitely stronger but don't take the angle into account

I'm thinking that if dudebra is modifying existing axles..all he is doing is shortening the tranny end by maybe an 1/8th of an inch and maybe carefully clearance grinding the CV joint.

My MK4 used to slammed but never tweaked it below 23 before I parted all the aftermarket stuff.

After 7 axles...maybe just give some stuff a try? An angle grinder is pretty cheap...whats the worst that could happen? Just use good judgement and don't go overboard. Just remember you can always take more material off...its much harder to put it back on

                              Stance looks great!
