I havn't updated this in a long time. Anyways here it is.

I did a complete front end over haul/subframe re and re and figured while I was in there might as well drop the oil pan and do the gasket.

I really wish I would have planned ahead and had an M10 oil pan already painted/prepped and ready to go, but it was kind of a last minute decision to do the pan while the subframe was off, but either way I'm not bothered. A new gasket is a happy gasket.

The reason why I actually replaced the front subframe wasn't just because I had a nice painted one, but I had one that I had reinforced in order to prevent a common subframe failure which occurs between where the steering box and engine mount bolt up on the driver side of the frame.

    Bolted in

I also finally finished up the e-brake assembly on the car. I was missing one spring return clip for the driver side, so I had been running around with only one caliper working for ebrakes (which actually still worked better than the stock drums, haha)

So here's the list of things that have been replaced this year during the front and rear axle over hauls:

    Front:
    -Strut bearings
    -Billy Sport Struts
    -Eibach springs
-Control arms, control arm bushings , control arm ball joints
    -Radius rod bushings (poly)
-Swaybars (fucking huge) with poly bushings
    -Center link
    -Idler arm/bushings
    -tie rods complete
-Steering box is a relatively fresh ZF reman from Kirin's car (PO works for ZF)
-Motor mount (one side was available, will do the other as soon as I can get it)
    -Oil pan gasket
    -Beefed up subframe

    Rear end:
-Shock towers cut out/rebuilt no more rust
-Rear shock tower strut bar with battery hold down
    -Shock mounts
    -Billy Sport Shocks
    -Eibach springs
-OEM subframe mounts with Ireland Poly inserts
    -Poly diff mounts
    -OEM trailing arm bushings
    -3.91LSD/modifief ireland flanges
    -Rear wheel bearings/seals
    -Rebuilt CV axles

Also. almost all pieces of metal I put in the car have been sandblasted and painted with POR15 or something similar.

Included in the front and rear overhauls were brakes which consisted of:

    Front:
    -E21 Vented Rotors
    -Volvo four piston calipers
-Late model E21 hubs/new wheel bearings
    -Dan Block pads
-New OEM brake lines (would like to replace with SS)

    Rear:
    -Mk1 VW rotors
    -Mk2 Scirocco calipers
-Modified shaved down 2002 stub axles/trailing arms
    -ATE pads
    -SS lines (all four)
    -Custom caliper mounting brackets
    -Modified E-brake cables

To power that I put in an E12 brake master cylinder and filled the car up with ATE super blue.

And in more recent updates, I finally finished installing the headers today. Got held up because I didn't have any loctite, and if you don't loctite the head studs, the top 4 will leak oil, and the rest will back out if you ever try and take the nuts off.

You wish your hardware was this nice

Anyways, well the little M10 finally gave up. Low compression, cylinder walls scored wouldn't run anymore.

              Effin' engine!

Anyways, I couldn't find a known good M10, the engine in the car was actually not the original engine and had already been rebuilt with oversized pistons, so I couldn't rebuild it unless I went with custom pistons. So I decided to go the M20 route. Wanted to do an engine swap for a long time and figured it was a good opportunity.

Rewired chassis with factory E30 C101 connector so the engine harness was plug and play

Also had to relocate the battery to the trunk which now sits in my rear strut brace/battery tray. I used an E30 power cable and junction block to try and make things feel OEM

Custom engine mounting brackets I bought from a guy on the 2002FAQ

              Test fit

Anyways, I spent all of Good Friday working on my '53 pickup with my dad. Saturday I chose to dedicated to Minty. Woke up at 6:30AM , dropped the GF off at work and went straight to the shop to work.

Had 86mm removed from my drive shaft to accommodate a new engine position (M20 as far back as I possibly can have it. About 1cm from the firewall), as well as mated to the new E21 323i transmission. New U-joins, CSB, Guibo, and I also had to shorten both the shift platform , shifter selector rod, and shift platform support beam to accommodate a longer transmission while keeping the shifter level in the original hole in the tranny tunnel.

New gaskets and exhaust nuts. Unfortunately the M20 headers I had would not fit both in the front and rear. They hit the frame rail, firewall as well as Idler arm. Ended up using stock M20 manifolds with a shot of VHT header paint. The Cast Iron finish came out nicer than I thought it would

Most of the powder coated bits are on

Test fitting my fabbed upper radiator support. It fits and works for now, but may have to come up with something else when I get an aluminum radiator made.

Got most of the wiring tidied up. Decided go with a 12'' fan kit from Ireland engineering. Glad I didn't get the 14'' kit as it would not have fit. Also decided to hard wire it to a switch rather than use the thermo-switch to control fan operation. I'd rather be in control all the time. The electric fan combined with the lower temp (70degree) thermostat should keep things nice and cool. Sexy face Colin!

Very excited to have my car back. Still can't believe I drove it this past weekend, and am stoked that it's ready for me to enjoy for the entire upcoming summer.
