Leave it to GM to waste 5 mil they can use in job security on a car that will never see production.
IIRC the guy that stumbled upon turning sea water into fuel made the discovery via a search for a cure for cancer. His idea was then repeatedly shut out by the Gov.

Every car company spends a LOT of money on developmental technologies and prototypes that are never intended to see production. As much as I think GM is a poorly run corporation, this is no different from anything any other car manufacturer does and is how companies develop new ideas for future models, so your statement is very short-sighted

Its definitely different. Its not short sighted at all. JOB SECURITY! When was the last time you followed up on the Domestic car companies losing money and laying off employees and shutting down plants cause they need copious amounts of Government findings?

This thread should be in off topic not?

this video was made well before GM went into bankruptcy.

You are also forgetting that auto manufacturers get tax credits for spending money on development of "clean energy" technology. Not to mention that a few years ago the government made it mandatory for them to spend a certain percentage of profits on research into that stuff.

              .
That I wasnt aware of but employees were still suffering and being laid off before the bankruptcy. Why did GM go bankrupt? They were losing money and not using brains. Its not that old. The idea of burning sea water and converting it to energy is yet relatively new. And yet it was dismissed by the Gov. for quite sometime so manufacturers using the idea is even newer yet.

I agree, they made shitty cars for decades. But it just doesn't have anything to do with their clean energy research, blame the government for that one. This car is from 2002 when GM was still making profits in the billions.

I work in the financial field so I followed the entire bankruptcy, bailout, etc. I'd say I'm fairly knowledgeable about it

GM was run very poorly with too many similar models, focusing on the wrong products, and producing generally inferior products all around. On top of that, the UAW was a huge burden on GM between pensions for all the retired workers and the ridiculously high pay for very simple non-skilled factory jobs (I recall reading figures like $25+ an hour for the most basic of assembly line jobs for union workers which is just ridiculous). GM is a huge corporation that was building inferior products with internal/overhead costs that were far too high given their profits. From a corporate perspective, those workers are replaceable, so when the security of the corporation is concerned, they were unfortunately the first to go
