My guess would be the rear shock travel was so short that eventually the stress of banging off the bump stop, or running no bump stop, eventually ripped the center of the shock mount out itself...
I can't imagine it rides very good if a bump blows out the rear shock mount.
As someone said it might be worth the time to raise the rear shock mounting point. This will give the same low but will actually give some shock travel.
