  • e38 rehab

Well after swearing up and down that I was threw with e38s when the incident with the last one happened I made the STUPID decision of taking on another one. The car has been going from one friends shop to another for the last two weeks so I haven't had a chance to get the coilovers dialed in but that's happening tomorrow. Binjammin was helping me iron out some small stuff and took these for me yesterday before he dropped the car off to my other friends shop to do the brakes and rear ball joints replaced.

For those of you who are interested in how in depth the restoration on this car was heres the FS ad im toying with putting up.

For some stupid, senseless, thoughtless reason I decided to buy this car as a project over this past winter. When I bought it I knew the chain guides were bad and it needed TLC. I figured instead of spending $7,000 on a clean e38 that would eventually need everything anyway I’d buy one with the issues already existing and start from scratch. The plan quickly began to backfire but after about 6 months of work and over $10,000 down the drain I ended up with what is close to one of the cleaner e38s around.

The only good thing about the car when I bought it was the recently rebuilt sports transmission. With the exception of that this is what was done (everything listed below has less then 500 miles on). I’ve hardly driven the car at all.

    The car:
    - 2000 Swartz on black 740i Msport
    - 198,xxx and counting
    - 100% RUST FREE
    - Lighted inner and outer handles

    - Oil separator
    - Oil separator hose
    - Rear crankcase valve (on manifold)
    - Manifold seals
    - Front and rear upper manifold seals (CCV and throttle body)
    - Both belts
    - All pulleys
    - New hydraulic tensioner
    - All engine related seals
    - NGK Plugs
    - Spark plug tubes
    - Oil filter housing hoses
    - Secondary Air pump and hose
    - Oil pan gaskets
    - New Bosch battery

    Engine cooling:
    - Thermostat
    - Water pump
    - Water pump pulley
    - Every single coolant hose on the car
    - Radiator

    - Power steering hoses

    Heating/AC
    - Original Blower motor
    - Original Blower resistor
    - Newer HVAC Unit

    Brakes:
    - Sebro Rotors (full coated german rotors)
    - Akebono ceramic pads
    - OE sensors

    Suspension and wheels:
    - FK highsport coilovers
    - FK links
    - Rear ball joints
    - Rear integral links
    - H&R 30mm hubcentric spacers (x4)
    - 19x10 19x9 Style 231 wheels
    - 255/35/19 235/35/19 Falken 452s
    - Chrome stems

    Audio
    - Rear DSP shelf delete
    - Custom 12” Alpine Type R enclosure built to Alpine spec with Suede cover
    - Alpine 500/1 Mono amp
    - Newer Alpine 12” Type R
    - JL wiring and fuse
    - LOC output converter

    Body:
    - Full professional Re-spray done by Robby of Samuel Jaguar in Brighton
    - Rust free rear doors
    - New Rear window regulator
    - Custom front bumper (shaved Alpina lip)
    - Kidney grills
    - Amber corners
    - Amber Side markers
    - New emblems
    - Painted skirts and rear bumpers
    - Rolled front and rear fenders (no cracking or chipping)
    - New trunk seal
    - Taillight reseal

*The body restoration was unexpected but after realizing my original plan of swapping the doors out wouldn’t work because the black on the door was Cosmos and the black on my car was Swartz I decided to find someone who could REALLY do the job (finding a good body shop that will work with you is near impossible in Boston). Robby spent over a month with the car. He completely stripped it down (even the AC fan to avoid any potential overspray). The hood, trunk, doors, plastics, bumper, etc were all painted off the car and then aligned on when being put back on. I chose to bring it to him because he specializes in restoration. After going through the cars body with a comb he wet sanded and buffed it several times. He was actually unhappy with me for not wanting to spend the extra $ on new moldings because it took away from the cleanliness of his work. I won’t mention what it cost me but I will tell you it was extremely reasonable for the amount of time invested and for how much work the body needed.

The one thing I was about to address was the interior but I’ve decided I’m tapping out with this car.

    Good:
-The seats are heated sports seats with no tears.
    - The dash has no cracks
    - The door panels are mint.
    - All five rear shades are intact and fully functional
    - The cupholder works as do all the buttons.

    Bad:
    - Needs glove box handle
    - Need rear seat cupholder
    - Sport steering wheel has gash
    - Cluster pixels are failing
    - Front seats need leather treatment (might do that this week when it gets detailed)
    - MKII screen has small line and tape deck doesn’t work

The price of the car includes a new MKII screen if someone cares to fix that one, a COMPLETE grey sport interior with panels and dash (I was thinking about putting this in because it would be cool to have a black on dove but ran out of energy), COMPLETE wood trim with no cracks minus shifter wood, enough black suede to wrap the headliner, pillars, visors, and would trim, original mufflers, and a box full of other misc modules and such (LCM, general module, etc).

Looks great, always really liked those wheels and wondered why more people didn't run them as an alternative to the style 95s.

Yea Jeremy. I haven't had a chance to dial it in but like I said that's happening asap and I'm sure it will change the appearance of the wheel. They look ridiculous in person. I guess i'll be the guinea pig with trying to get them looking proper.

More camber and some tuckage and it should be night and day.

Thanks man. Yea I shaved the Alpina. I didn't really give a shit about running a Rep I just didn't want it to say Alpina. Flows a little better IMO.
