  • Why I was super late to MotorUnion

So last Friday a buddy and I left for Chicago from Detroit. We had originally left just to spend a weekend there and check out Wekfest, but then realized MotorUnion was that Friday. We adjust our plans and decided to leave early so we could check out the show before we had to check in at our hotel.

Last minute decided to take my Focus because it gets better gas mileage and had more tread on the tires than my other car. Left at 6:30am eastern with an arrival time to the show of 10:15am central.

Well half way to Chicago I came across a 4x4 laying in the road, that the car in front of me cleared, but that I couldn't avoid in time.

And there is the result. Had to get towed 112 miles back home, jumped in my other car and drove out. We decided to check in at the hotel and then go check out the show. Got there just in time to see everyone jump in the cars and leave at 6pm central.

    Cars all sounded absolutely amazing.

Was hoping that the shop would be represented at Wekfest but didn't notice any of the cars there.

Overall ended up being a good weekend, other than the 11 hour total drive to the hotel.

Holy cow. Was this 4x4 made out of hardened steel, and bolted down to the road? I cant imagine how a piece of wood ,even at highway speeds, made it clean through both sides of the pan like that.

It was about 4 feet long and laying perfectly lengthwise in the lane. When I stopped all of it was underneath the car, with about a foot wedged beneath the subframe that sits to the rear of the engine. It peeled the metal on the subframe down as well as splittling around the subframe. I think the initial hit just cracked the pan, but that when I got on the shoulder the wood hit rumble strips and hit the pan again braking shit off.

Here's a couple pics my buddy took while waiting for the tow truck after we raised the front.

Haha, in this situation, I don't think it would have helped much... Sick damage on the pan! Did you manage to stop the engine in time?

                  Good luck on the repairs!
