Can I assume the because the Miata is a convertible, the frame rails are artificially low compared to say a coupe or sedan because they need to support the center of the car from bowing in lieu of a top? That would be consistent with other verts I have wrenched on.

Driving a car that is wearing through frame rails and can only be driven at 30 mph on the highway is a danger to not only himself, but others as well. I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if his frame was legit warped from this escapade.
