      I don't get it...

There are multiple things about my car that could elicit a ticket or worse, but if those things happen I am to blame; not the cop who enforces the law I choose to break. His actions aside (which, lets face it, there are assholes in all walks of life), he did his job.

hey i **** to bring this up but your car cannot be towed if you are from another state...... no matter how illegal it is they do not decide what is legal in what state you live in.... you could have quite a lawsuit on your hands man.
Bottom line if you live in Rhode island a maryland state cop cannot say your car is illegal he does not know the law in rhode island it could be legal there.........

            HAHAHAHAHA. Really?

Age of consent here in Canada is 16, good luck to any Canadian banging a 16 year old South of the border.

Hint: the law applies to where you are, not where you're from...

Right... but automobiles are a bit different. It all depends on the situation and what law you've broken, but typically your car's laws apply to where it is registered.

If I take my car that has no catalytic converter and is legal here in TN to say, California, a cop can't give me a ticket for not having a cat, because the car is under "visitation" in the state. I believe if the vehicle is there for 30 days you have to re-register the vehicle in that state, and then obviously the laws apply.

that is what i mean, i drug my car through a parking garage got stuck, did a burnout getting out and ripped concrete out of the parking garge floor all while being followed by a cop, he ask'd me if the car was street legal, i pointed to my plate and said in pennsylvania it is and he told me to have a nice day....

It doesn't mean the cop will care. Cops will keep you from driving if they really want to.

I thought that if the car was deemed unsafe, then they had a right to tow it?

                            Absolutely.

The laws apply to what state you're in. Not what state the car's registered in. There may be some exceptions to that (maybe emissions like Mike was saying), but I can tell you right now that that is totally untrue that a cop can't ticket you in a different state for something that may be legal in another state. Like really, people actually believe that? You think cops are supposed to know the laws of all states?

                              That's what I was thinking.

Its like having a taillight out, I know its a weak example, but hey happened to me.

A good example would be noise ordinances. Some states you can have a pretty damn loud and modified exhaust. That doesn't mean you can come plowing through NY with your hick ass exhaust and not get a ticket. (kidding about the hick thing, I love loud exhausts lol)

And even if that is true on the slightest off chance, they would definitely still be able to ticket you and tow you if they feel necessary, and then maybe it would get dropped when you bring your case to court.
