What you say is all true, but the style was not specific to a few cars, the Mercs (not early Mercs, by any means, just old :P) were just the most popular choice in car. What I should have said was the "heyday" of lead filler. The term sled was used much more loosely back then than it is now, it pretty much just meant big, low car. "lead sled" reffers to early mercury's with roof chops and completely shaved lines using lead filler... The term "sled" is commonly used when reffering to the sleek lines of 50's - 60's model cars that were overly rounded in form and extremely low to the earth by means of static suspension and in later times airbags.
But there is no era of lead filling, there are still select shops that swear by it.. I wouldn't try to narrow it down to one specific period of time
