  • Staying Static

A few years back my friend Jeff, one of the people responsible for me getting into cars, picked up an 07 GTi. He asked me for advice on what coils to run and I advised FKs because I had them on my e39 and really loved them. He bought the FKs, dumped the car, did software, an exhaust, added a boser, debadged grill, and a bunch of other stuff. Last year he started talking about wheels. Coming out of the Honda scene he wasn't to familiar with what he wanted to run he just knew he wanted the car to look different. If there was one thing I knew it was that he wouldn't short out on wheels. He always had dope wheels on his Hondas and I just knew he had it in him. I saw that a set of futuras that I tried fitting on my e39 and that AndreNY had brought in from Germany for his 500e popped back up for sale in CA. They were 19x11 19x9.5 and had been refinished with gold bolts, rebarrelled for mkv fitment, and re-polished. The problem was the mkv they were on was bagged so I wasn't exactly sure if it could be made to work. Jeff didn't seem to give a shit and bought them anyway.

Fast forward a few months and Jeffs car was in the body shop, still on FKs, getting the quarters and fenders pulled to fit the wheels. He started talking about bags after the setup was on because he keeps running into problems with the rear quarters. I told him to redo the quarters in straight metal and to keep the car on coils because it makes the fitment and car so much more dope.

The car is daily driven IN Boston which isn't an easy feat to begin with. We didn't get a chance to pull the front helper springs before the trip down but they are coming out this week and the front is going down more.

I'm no photographer and actually haven't touched my camera since h20 in 07 but grabbed it on my way out and shot these while drivin on the way down and back:

Theres alot more to come for next year. If anyone has pics from this weekend I'd love to see them. Help keep this car static: Cast your vote.

*This thread isn't meant to offend anyone with a bagged mkv so don't take it to heart.

the only reason someone would stay static, is if they can't afford air, imo. Ride low and park lower. Having air-ride doesn't make you a pussy. Just riding completely aired up, all the time, does

i can afford air and i would never do it, 90% off ppl with air ride ride at near stock height and only air it out at a show or when parked and THAT makes you a pussy =P

i love drivin my car everyday hella low, yea it sux when you cant get in and out of certain places but it is what it is, might as well have a stock daily if its that big of an issue for you...

Depends on the car, and fitment wanted. There are 0 negatives to bags, you can still drive just as low, if not lower, and you park lower. Obviously it is more difficult to make it work Static, but who really cares? That said my car is static, but when a set of GC's is nearly the same as a Bagyard setup, it is hard to justify going the static route. Also, train horns.

If he drives around with fitment like that, he should be just fine static though.

True and I hear that. I just think its neat to see something this low stay low all the time and watching him struggle when we go places. Its probably gonna end up on bags anyway this thread was really more to post pics of his car and piss him off then anything else.

I stayed static on my Jetta, does that mean I couldn't afford air on it?

PS: I'll give you a hint... It has nothing to do with affording it or not as I have Lexus as well that's on air.

you can't run ridiculous springs rates like the VIP guys do in japan. i have the option of running and revalving my coilovers for 20kg/mm spring rates, but that's much harder to do with bags.

at a certain point, most bag setups become too soft for really, really low cars. a few guys on VIP car forums have been complaining about their setups because they want to go lower but they also don't want to smash subframe on every dip in the road

You can spark still when on air.

I know where you are coming from there, and I get what you are saying. Just for example however, on bags, on a good road you can run .5" off the ground, and then pop up to 2" on a rough road as your rates are soft. With a super stiff set of coils, you can run it 1" off the ground all the time, but as you have to drive the rough road at the same height as a smooth one, you are forced to keep it up at 1" rather than the .5". Obviously the amount of scraping and smashing you want to put up with plays a role as well, but I think you can get my point.
