I'm not speaking for the OP, but from what I've seen the M30 is a pretty snug fit. The M20 is much more at home in the chassis, especially since the 323i came with an M20 block to begin with. I know that some of the tuners of the era did M30 swaps, but those bays were stuffed.

Why not M30B35?
And why put in the M30B30?
Well...i got the engine and tranny for free and i wanted to take the challenge
I want to get this baby up and running, and in the future i will look for a more powerfull M30-variant.
Also, Alpina used this engine for the B6 2.8 so it sure is do-able.
