  • Volkswagen Beetle 1971, "Wonky Bastard"

    Hello

This is my other project - the "Wonky Bastard".

Car sat for about 13 years, some of it outside and most of it in the cellar under the house. As it was left outside without the air filter housing
then the rain poured right inside the engine, so it was filled with water. Engine got repaired in Latvia by Valdis (the Baltic aircooled guy).
Drives and works fine, but I still need to buy myself a new carburettor and distributor, as I didn't get them back then and those are quite worn.
It's been almost a year from when the beetle got back on the road (August 8th 2017) and so far I've done about 6000 kilometers with it.

At first I wanted to do it as seventies style lowrider bug, but as the body is not very good, then I decided to go with the plan B - aircooled
gasserish/hoodride/weathered look with a lot of grafix (I'm a pinstriper-signpainter-custom painter myself). I already have a "frame off" with
my girlfriend's Volvo Amazon mild kustom project (yes, it's not really on a frame but you get the idea), so decided to keep the beetle a rolling
project without too much worrying about it. Just fixed the floor and it's good to go.

Back to the style - as the direction went more towards the aircooled gasser look, then of course it had to have the Centerlines and quite a rake.
To be honest then wheels are Centerline replicas. Rear tires at the moment are actually wide whitewalls, but just reversed.

In the end though it will be some kind of strange weirdo with hints from different genres.

After coming back from a week long travel to the Kustom Kulture Forever, we found a lot of leftover hairs that our three cats produced.
I had a scallop-idea in mind anyway so decided to put those hairs to a good use and did a sponge-effect for the scallops.

Wonky Bastard is a constantly evolving and work-in-progress project. Just yesterday I decided to add some holographic flakes
to the side letterings and also flaked out the roof with a brush I guess the summer heat got me trippin'.
Also added some copper leaf around the roof. Did it outside with the wind, so it looks strange, but kinda adds to the overall patinaed look.

It looks really patchy and uneven at the moment, but I will paint some panels on the roof too, so in the end it should all come
together nicely and the small amount of flakes will be glowing enough when the sun hits it.

I love this but the graphics call for it to be slammed

Naah, I’m not into the nowadays-slammed-look when it comes to Beetles. California rake is more of my thing with this exact car.
