  • BMW E46 316ti - Compact - UK

I have already started this thread elsewhere on the net but thought I would post a few bits here.

Picked up a 'non-runner' BMW E46 compact 316ti for £200 and paid £120 to have it delivered to an old work place where I was allowed to temporarily store the car. The car has no MOT, Tax or Insurance currently.

My original plan was to try and get it road running legally and then move it around but this has since changed. But during the first week of owning the car I done a few maintenance bits, one being changing the flat battery for from a 570A to 600A new unit.

Also done an oil & filter service, air filter, coil swap & PAS fluid flush.

Few photos to show some general conditioning of the underneath.

Started the removal of the interior. This included seats, carpet, parcel shelf, trims, seatbelts, rear screen washer fluid bottle etc.

Couple photos of the car on from the camera.

So at this stage you may be wondering why an earth I bought a 316ti non runner etc.

I have since found a permanent place I can store / work on the car while remaining SORN. I will be getting the car moved in the next couple of weeks.

I will be stripping the engine out and in replacement will be a 330d 204bhp from a 2003 saloon (I am buying a whole donor car, with low miles). The car is auto but I will be changing to manual, also comes with BC racing coilovers. The brakes and chassis will be swapped over where possible and the M Sport front end. It will be a major learning curve for me.

While the car has been stored I have paid a friend for a set of 18" BBS RK wheels which I will be in ownership of as soon as a mate has space to bring them down from the north of England.

    Well... shit.

This is amazing and I am very very much in for more updates! Would absolutely love to give something like this a crack.

Excited for you mate! Also it's cool to see another UK e46 on here even if it is a compact and basically going to become a monster. Overall shell does look really clean too! What other website have you made this thread on as well btw out of curiosity?

Erm I also pop on pistonheads / detailing world & now E46 zone, although I struggle for time now since I changed jobs before getting this car. I used to able to chill at work and forum bash all day haha.

If you mean what camera setup that is a Canon 6D and a Canon 35mm L

          Update

Picking up BBS RK wheels on Sunday after Ultimate Dubs, I picked up a set of jacks last week and will pick up another set next week and get the car to the unit and get it off the floor and carry on stripping.

I have had an expensive couple months with paying off my holiday, finishing a bike build and my work is at a quiet period currently and back on the up again now so can start paying off for the 330d

            Update.

After a busy weekend heading to Telford to visit the Ultimate Dubs event to take some photos, I then headed up to my mate in the end towards Liverpool to collect my wheels.

            18 x 10J ET28

Will get them bolted on and get a photo of them on the car and then the car should be ready to move!

Right I apologise in advance for the shocking phone photos, I will get the camera out soon enough!

              So the 'new' compact.

The Alpina saloon front bumper for the front end swap..

One of the 2 saloon front wings..

So it turned out I managed to pick the whole car up not just the parts, the guy didn't have time to strip everything I need and seeing as he needed the car gone ASAP he decided to call it quits and give the car to me, I even offered to let him sell his interior online and they could collect it from me but he said i was doing him a favour taking so much at once that it was fine for me to keep.

So I had to arrange a van and a trailer and luckily a mate pulled through after some messing around one the day we set off to Ipswich.

So the car has had some money spent over the last few years, I went through some of the paperwork today, that including some power steering pipe work, clutch and dual mass, servicing and some other bits and pieces. The new clutch and dual mass will do me for now.

Bonuses include getting the set of BMW MV1 alloy wheels although I believe 1 is cracked so when possible I will get the tyres off and inspect, I will buy 1 or 2 to make up a set and use them to get the compact 'road ready' until I am ready to buy new wheels.

The car has also been remapped, this is no doubt what finished off the turbo and caused the core failure. But I think I will get the ECU flashed to make sure the car is running correctly and have it mapped in my own time by someone of my own choice.

The car came with a full leather interior including leather door cards so these will be for sale to return some £££.

This week the strip down begins on both cars, but I'm now in full time work so can't get down to the unit to help out as much as I would of hoped but I will get down there with the camera soon for updates!

              My next few plans are

              - Turbo rebuild / replacement
              - Service items (Oil & Filter / Air Filter / Pollen filter / Fuel Filter)
              - Maintenance items (Thermostat / Waterpump / Rad etc)
              - EGR system delete & swirl flap removal (Bit concerned this hasn't been done at this mileage)
              - Discs & brakes all round & braided lines.
              - Wheels & tyres
