  • Techno E36 winter rebuild project. Where did all my money go?

I've been super busy the past year. My girl and I have neglected the car and I think it's time to turn it around. I don't have a lot of time but my friends at Status Auto Inc decided they will help me restore this thing to its original glory.

Here is where I'm at with it. Car has been set up well for handling but its time to upgrade everything. I've outgrown the ST XTA Coilovers (they have been fantastic) and I'm in need of a few other upgrades. Don't judge me on these wheels, they are just some random roll around wheels while my Kinesis get refurbished and I'm going to build my RS's.

    NOW, lets start.

    The front end is blasted

Caught a few huge rocks also

Event tho they are glass... ouch

The rubber seals are also gone

The front side splitters have seen better days

The interior, no matter how many times is has been cleaned and no matter how many times it has been conditioned it still continues to rip and look depressing

    So here we are.

    The list

    To do:
    - Repaint front end (bumper, fenders, hood, nose panel)
    - Color correct the rest of car
    - Put it up on the list and check for any and all oil leaks
    - Check wheel bearings
    - Check bushings
    - Find full black sedan interior
    - Finish BBS RS Wheels
    - Drill Steering Wheel Bolts and Lower It

    To buy:
    - KW Clubsport Coilovers
    - KW Front & Rear Swaybars
    - Rear Swaybar Adjustable Endlinks
    - Swift Rear Linear Springs
    - Race Engineering Front Strut Brace
    - AKG 75D Subframe Bushings
    - AKG 75D Diff Bushings
    - AKG 75D Trailing Arm Bushings
    - AKG Trailing Arm Reinforcement Plates
    - AKG Front Control Arm Bushings
    - Dinan Axel Back Exhaust
    - OEM Front 2-Piece Floating Rotors
    - OEM Foglight Covers
    - Fxd&Wlded Hard Mount Shifter
    - BBS Center Cap Logos
    - BBS Gold Hardware
    - Momo Steering Wheel Hub
    - ZKW Headlight Glass
    - LTW Full Front Splitter Setup

Car just got dropped off at the shop today. Monday when it goes up in the air, I have a feeling this list will grow.

I'm glad I have a lift for the car as I'm tired of working on my ass in my cold garage. lol

Cool you are restoring it, I love my techno sedan too. FYI, you can find new zkw glass from Schmiedmann; I had a tough time finding them and they had them in stock this last summer.

Are you sure you want to run the BBS RS on this? I think they are pretty played out and they fit the E30 much better.

But if you REALLY want, go ahead.

Didn't know you had this too man. Good to see it's getting the attention it deserves. I've got my eye on a TV Touring over here, but I can't afford it right now haha.

They will be different to some extent. Im going to run them face mounted so I can run a full tire on them. No stretch. Im going for the oldschool dtm racecar look with sticky tires. Also they will be gloss black lips, satin black centers with gold hardware and 3d gold logos.

The back of the faces have been machined to take the lip

Ill update tomorrow as the powder coat place should have them done.

Dude TV Touring would be so dope. I almost got that silver touring last year in Romania but I left early. Ill look for one this year when I go back. Need to buy a car there so I stop borrowing my friends. lol

Excellent stuff, can't wait to see progress. Your M3 is spec'd exactly as I would like to have one day, Techno 3/4/5.

We looked for the car for a few months before we found it. My girlfriend and I made a 1100 mile round trip to go pick it up.

I love the Touring man. I've been following your build. Love it.

                    UPDATE

So we got the car in the air. We stripped some of the old stuff off Sunday & Monday. ST XTA coilovers, Eibach swaybars (front and rear), Supersprint exhaust and Racing Dynamics front strut bar have been sold. I had no time to even take photos of the old stuff. I can't believe how fast they sold.

Front with missing stuff. The fender wells need to be cleaned

                    Rear

And now for the part where my wallet will hurt more.

We found out the oil pan gasket is leaking and the radiator. Fawk! Well, in that case I'll get the Achilles Motorsports oil pan baffle and Turner safety wire oil pump nut. We will see how this development unfolds. As for the radiator I'm going to go OEM and get an M Z3 one.

Might as well pressure wash everything and change the tranny fluid as well. Might go GM Synchro Mesh.

And the diff leaks also. Great! Maybe a should re-shim the diff since I got new bushings and now I'm going to have to get new fluid and a seal.

And somewhere around here there will be a Dinan axle back section

Here are a few other projects from around the shop. First one up is a wide body E46 M3. It's getting Rocketbunny and Airlift 3H.

Next up is this 997.1 S with Accuair, HRE wheels thats getting some much needed engine work.

And last, this crazy FRS with Advans, Varias widebody, Greddy turbo kit and lots of other goodies. I know he ordered TE's for it next.

Tomorrow I'll order a bunch of parts and put up an update list.

Here is what the car looked like when it used to be really clean. Motivation to bring it back.

Just curious, why do you need to pull the fenders and hood off?

I think he said he was getting them resprayed due to excessive rock chipping.
