  • Anyone else notice the start/stop points on the weld joints (starts in the middle, stops in the middle, not one continuous weld)? And how there wasn't hardly ANY heat put into the tubing when it was welded? ("blueing" of the metal shows how much penetration the weld has, showing weld strength)

While the cage looks cool, I'd be concerned for the overall strength and integrity of the welds. I'd be afraid they would break if put to the test. I'm not trying to bash you at all OP, but moreso the so-called "fabrication expert" who did the welding.

        • i agree with everyone saying those welds look a bit dodgy. they should hold up, but almost seems like whoever welded didnt set up the welder correctly. i worked in a metalwork shop for while and welds like those would not be let out the door, especially on something like a cage

yeah i was gonna suggest for the splitter, it would be really easy to make some cf ones...like in a day or two...

just get a piece of glass/polished metal, wax it up like 10 times, lay down some epoxy resin (can't be polyester, epoxy eventually yellows in the sun, but it is like 10x stronger than polyester for bonding the fibers) lay your cf over it. brush on 2ish more coats onto the back. let dry. pop off, cut out template w/ dremmel and flip to side that was touching glass and BAM! brand new super light/strong splitter.

i'm running out of cf but when i order some more thats what im doing for mine
Yeah I am def doing a CF splitter but the Honeycomb type..

About the rear brake lines going through the cabin though... isn't that a little dangerous?
I mean there's a lot off pressure in those lines and I don't think you want to be anywhere near them when they rip/snap(like in a crash or something). There would be brake fluid all over the cabin...
I don't know, maybe a lot of racecars are running this setup, just seems dangerous to me...
Maybe I'm just being a sissy, let me know haha!
It will be okay, you remember the hydro has lines running to it also, so that would cause an issue if that was the case..

Whoever was welding wasn't very sure of himself, or they don't know the "half-moon" method of welding DOM tubing.

Thanks for your concerns about the welds. I am not an expert welder or begin to know what I am talking about. But I know for a fact that these welds are okay and will get the job done.

                    you want nomex core:

DragonPlate offers custom carbon fiber shapes and carbon fiber composite products, including tubes, sheets, and plates.

lightweight, and is heat resistant...only thing is it's kinda pricy..other option is aluminum core, but it would be really heavy and defeat the purpose.

                    • ^^ Yup I love that site,, I was looking at that nomex core or the Polypropylene....
Also was considering doing Aluminum Core also, since Russell has that on his WRX and works great, and cheaper.

                              • I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but those welds on the cage look... frightening.

This is what it should look like. This was done by my buddy Kent at his shop Precision Chassis Works in Gilbert, AZ.

The rest of the car looks great, and I'm not trying to **** or anything but the cage is a huge safety item and I'd h.a.t.e. to see it fail when you need it.
