First Car Project: Scirocco Content

Alright, my first thread I made had a horrendous spelling mistake in the title, so I'm making a new one. I'm a high school student and with the help of my father, purchased a pretty decent Scirocco 16v for $1600. Got It trailered to Saint Matthews Import's so they could work their magic . I love making a mess of things when I tear into them, so bear with me: this is gonna be a slooooow build.

Plans:
-Get it running reliably and make sure it's not gonna blow up.
-Bodywork
-Interior bits
-suspension
-Wheels (OZ Turbos, or some deep Borbet A's, maybe some 80's styling, who knows )

Alright, just in: shifter linkage bushings are garbage and the P.O put the shifter linkage on backwards, which explains the reason why it had a "slow takeoff." They'll be looking into it more tomorrow. I just hope I can contain my excitement when this thing is driveable!

Alright folks, more of a update! Literally got the shikera (as my dad calls it ) back from the shop this afternoon. Drove it from SMI to home around 30 min away with no registration in car, no plates, and no seat belts . It runs well and good for a $1600/30 year old car . County brownie gave us a scare when he came directly behind us, and slowly passed us.

Oh boy I love me a Scirocco. This is awesome and the wheel choice is perfect as well. I would personally prefer the Borbet A's because they are some of my dream wheels but those Oz's will ook just as good. Sub'd.

UPDATE!

Alright, today was pretty eventful. Took it for my first drive (clutch took some getting used to) but before that, the ignition wire decided to vape . Scared the hell out of me. But thanks to the wiring harness, we eventually found that the P.O absolutely butchered the harness for some totally rad audio equipment . We did drive it around a bit, thankfully nothing caught on fire . Got it home, and proceeded to do some more cleaning.

Someone decided to "fix" the grille (?) or I'm stupid because the hole was drilled, and a tiny bit of the screw is sticking out of the grille

Basically my plan haha. I've been thinking of going with a period correct build. For example:

plus a momo cobra wheel:

and rock out to some pink floyd tracks on the cassette deck...that is out of the car... due to a smoky wiring harness

That thing is supposed to hold the original tools to the spare tire so they don't rattle around.

If you need a clean t-red hatch I have a pretty nice one laying around.

I got my hood insulation off with a scraper, then rubbed the remaining glue in laquer thinner to get it off (but not too hard since I didn't want to rub through paint). If you want to replace it afterwards you can get nice replacement foam pieces from here:

Also, another update.
Got home from school, tired as hell, and remembering we have to take our PSAT on Wednesday. Got out of my bad mood when we went to get the rocco Sheriff inspected and (hopefully) registered. Too bad we were 7 min late before the clerk's office closed

Freaked out for a sec, thinking we need plates, but remembered we did have any

Took it to the Sheriffs Office, which all it consisted of was a grumbling old lady, $5 and a clipboard.

Got it home safely, meaning nothing blew up. (insert horribly shot Iphone pic)

Also fooled around with the center console, and finally figured out what i wanted.

(Found 2 other VDO gauges to replace the ashtray)

Alright boys and girls or whatever you identify as, not much has happened lately with the car. Currently on the trail for a 16V harness to replace the one we have now .

Off topic, but saw this Mad-Max thing:

Alright, so another update has arrived. did some things to it, nothing very exciting...yet

First, this horridly photo-shopped picture:

got some fresh rubber and a alignment (not the best pics ik):

Decided to block off the missing washer nozzle:

So i bough some nylon block offs:

Didn't fit, so after some loctite, a lighter and robber gasket, this is the result:

Turns out, the taillights only had 1 bolt holding them on.So hopefully, they won't leak anymore.
Also decided on wheels, look for a cheap set atm:

Decided to take a break from the other things and pulled it in to work on the paint, or whats left of it:

Started scraping off the flaking clearcoat:



What's left of the top:

Then took off the plate lights:

Cleaned them:

Spread some Loctite to keep the together:

and got them back in, will eventually replace them:

Once that was done, started on a subfloor and parcel shelf:

Barely squeezed the wood into the rocco :


Got it back and traced the template:

Fun fact about this carpet: this was to be used in my dad's '79 transporter before he sold it. Now it will continue its life in a different Volkswagen!

Turned my attention to try and find this:


This thing gave me a hard time:

Forgot to snap pics, but realized the lock pull thing was missing completely, so i vacuumed out 30 years of leaves from the inside of the door.
Found the correct screws and got the rear seat actually bolted in:

Attempting to organize the wires (speaking of, we just bought a wiring harness ):

Cut out most of the nasty speaker wires:

Doesn't look all that bad...

Until you look under:

Bought these to put under the sunroof panel so it doesn't rattle:

got some grease to lube up the seat rails so it'll actually slide:



Got the seat back in 100% perfectly:

Don't these things have 4x100 bolt pattern? There should be a ton of wheels available for this thing, anything from a VW to a BMW (E30 and below), Renault etc.

yeah, its a 4x100 bolt pattern, but I'm going for Le Castellets off a '91 Cabrio. Just love the look of them.
