  • Oswald, Road back to Java

Whats up great people of Stance Works, how ya'll doing? What I'm bringing to you
is a little bit of a bug build/resto project. Felt like Oswald was for some reason a fitting name
but any who, got the car about a month ago and started to fix'r up. Car is not mine, its the roommates but I decided to document the process and show y'all

    via GIPHY

the body of the bug is a 1964 on a 1970 IRS pan. plan is to eventually
get it back to original 1964 king and link pan, when that happens it'll go on
Demon Motorsports hydraulic setup for the suspension.

For now though, the plans are quite simple
    - get it back to being drivable
    - restore the paint back to Java Green
    - Redo the air ride (My job in this build)
    - Engine rebuild

    Lets get this thing poppin!

    via GIPHY

In order to get the bug, traded this haggard Mk2 for it. The mk2, had its issues but as well did
the bug. The bug engine caught on fire thanks to a bad power wire on the starter.

    Bug build

Since there was a car getting an engine swap, just an ABA nothing fancy.

    Bug build

The bug went and sat on the side of the garage until that was done

    Bug build

    Bug build

The red hood HAD to go, way out of place. So, went and got a OE Java green hood and threw that bad boy on

    Bug build

So much better than the red

    via GIPHY

The engine swap on the Mk3 finally got done and so the bug went into the garage.

    Bug build

This is what Java Green looks like and we're going to try and bring
it back to its original stage. We're not going for perfect here, just mostly green with a fair
    amount of patina.

    Bug build

More coming soon, like tomorrow soon!

Alright peeps, we're back with a small little update

    via GIPHY

Todays project was to get rid of the molested dash in change for a better not so haggard dash

    Bug build

As you can see, the old dash has many cuts to it and MANY layers of bondo... Lovely

Anyways, we move onto cutting out the new dash pieces from a donor

    Bug build

New dash center tac welded in
    Bug build

Not a whole lot got done, but some progress beats none

    Until next time, folks

Buuuuugggggg. Always badass to see one of these. My neighbor used to have a 59 and a 61. Both were on the ground. One was a little bit of a darker green than in your picture and the other I had to pleasure of helping him build it from nothing but a body. Started as a patina until it got a fresh coat of charcol grey. Made me wanna get a bug ever since and now I got this one to look at

        Engine get outta here

        And we're back!

        via GIPHY

Well like I said before, the enginge compartment caught on fire thanks to a bad power wire. So we began the taredown, which if you ever worked on a bug all you need are 3 basic tools. 13mm, flat head screw driver and a hammer, throw a 10mm in that mix, so 4 basic tools haha

        Bug build

        Bug build

Engine is out and as you can tell, couldn't wait on sanding the bug. More pics of the sanding process
at a later time, right now its taking the engine out and off to my buddies house named Liberty to get
rebuilt while we work on the sanding and swapping fenders and doors

We loaded up the engine in my car and off to Liberties it went. Bug engine fits just pefect in an D2 A8 trunk

        Bug build

Our reaction once the trunk closed

        via GIPHY

The engine hauler and my daily, That'll get bagged soon (Build thread on the setup coming soon)

        Bug build

and to end the day today is our buddy Liberty's '64 bug

        Bug build

        Adios!

This one will be on the ground dragging pan with a fair amount of patina as well.

I love bugs, never owned one but I seem to work on them all the damn time haha

                Halfass update

Not really an update kind of update

While sanding I saw something perculiar, this was pretty much me

                via GIPHY

What I came across was a nice crack on the drivers side B pillar, so that'll be addressed.
This car has so much bondo, both inside and outside of the car. Pretty sure as we do more sanding
we'll uncover more hidden gems like this one.

                Bug build

In the pic you can see just how many paint layers there are.
                You've got;
                Gray
                Pink
                Gray
                Black
                Gray
                Java Green

So many layers. so much sanding to do. so little time
But for now some Spongebob finger blastin' y'all fools

Right?! By far the easiest engine I've ever taken out, close second was a
bay window bus I worked one before I shipped it out to some place in Germany

                    Body update

                    Mild update!

Arighty, not too much to show other than just a couple random pictures of the new'ish
java green body panels. I suppose its better than nothing

                    Removing the old fender

                    Bug build

Old non Java green fender gone

                    Bug build

                    Lastly, Java Green fender installed

                    Bug Build

                    No more Black doors

                    Bug build

We threw this old rusted fender on, love the ratty rusty look

                    Bug Build

                    Bug build

Then the sanding process began, starting with 220 followed by 400 and wet sanding at 600.
Just to get a feel of the overall color. Once its all Java green'ish, we'll go all the way to 2000 grit wet sanding.

It looks like a damn jawbreaker. Have I mentioned how many layers of paint there is? 5 just in case you missed it

                    Bug build

Then some quarter panel sanding action

                    Bug build

That'll end it for today peeps, thank you, come again

                      Semi-date

Alright, dudes and dudettes. Not a whole lot to report but I want to try
and keep it a daily thing to update this thread

So here we are, engine is out and my buddy started making a new engine
harness for the bug because the other one was trash and too short

                      Bug build

While my buddy took a break from the engine harness and started messing with the
wiring up at the front of the car. I planned on respraying the bay, it looked terrible.
no prep just straight up paint. I started with a scraper and found out two things.
                      1. the paint literally falls off because of the lack of prep work so that was actally a plus
                      2. plenty of Java green under all that paint

                      Bug build

After about 30 minutes with a plastic scraper this is what we have.

                      Bug build

Planned on painting the bay and ended up finding Java green under all that

                      via GIPHY

More on the paint at a later date.

For now, we moved to the front of the car and removed the gas tank because
                      she was a leaker.

                      Bug build

Random shot of the air ride that was haphazardly thrown in there
which will get redone with hardlines and other goodies can't spoil too much

                      Bug build

We're mainly waiting patiently for our buddy liberty to get the engine back to us.
just 5 more days until the show, hopefully it'll be ready. We haven't even drove the car so
who knows what'll go wrong on the first test drive

                      via GIPHY

Air ride hmm? I supposed this car would be light enough to go up and down fast enough with air shocks. Everybody I've known to build a bug always went static, but bagged.. that'll be badass

His last bug had air before it was static.
                          Pic of his previous bug

                          Bug

It'll be on air until we get the hydraulic setup figured out, but that won't
happen for a while We just want the car driving in 5 days... for the show

Well atleast you can test the suspension without having the engine in it might be pushing that 5 day goal if you havent got that engine back. Maybe it's just me but nothing ever goes as planned
