  • Chameleon E38

    Hi again guys.

After some.. mixed opinions on my E38 I went away and thought about what i'd done. This was how you last saw it

Aspen silver on XXR 968's. BC coilovers. Lots of car park dings, rusty arches, paint burned through on the OSR quarter, poorly colour matched OSF wing. I mean, it was ok from a distance, but the wheels were a bad choice looking back and I made some poor decisions along the way.

What did I do to fix this? I made some more poor decisions! Hooray! But stuck with it. It couldn't have been made any worse bodywork wise so I decided to try something I always fancied doing. Vinyl wrapping.

When vinyl wrapping, you need the best quality material money can buy and a clean, dust free indoor environment, away from the wind and rain and for better control over the application. Which is why I bought 30m of cheap Chinese wrap for £200 and wrapped the car outside in the pissing rain over the course of a couple of days. What could possibly go wrong?

..Not a lot, actually. It came up not bad at all. It was finally all one colour (yes yes I know, not technically one colour, but you know what I mean) and with a bit of filler and arch work, the dinks were less obvious too. Not perfect, but it's a £900 car, and i'm not expecting any concourse awards. Looks alright in pictures though

The XXR's were fucked too, I was hoping to put in a claim about them as there were some horrible manufacturing defects. The "stainless steel" lips rusted like there was no tomorrow and the faces looked like they corroded underneath the clear coat, they looked terrible. Both XXR and the supplier wanted nothing to do with it and for what I paid for them, it wasn't worth the hassle of a legal battle, so I sold them on to a local drift pal and put the money towards the wheels I originally wanted but was too impatient for.

CCW Clas.. no, not really. Japan Racing JR10's. I've never been able to justify "proper wheel" money on our household income, but i've used Japan Racing wheels for drifting before and they've taken the abuse, and in my opinion the JR10's are probably one of the best CCW Classic reps you can buy, with decent offsets too.

OH! And I also ripped out the 4:3 Nav system and the factory fitted DSP in favour of an aftermarket four channel amp feeding front components and the factory rear sub box. Might switch out the sub box for a proper sub at some point, but the icing on the cake for me is the 7" Kindle Fire that I managed to root and run the SlimLP custom Android ROM, so now I have Google Maps, Spotify, Facebook, Youtube, whatever I want from the dash of the car. Brought it completely up to date and with a few apps that control screen behaviour and a simplified home screen it's performed flawlessly.

Anyway, enough nonsense from me, here's some pictures and a video I made this weekend. The keener eyed of you will spot loads wrong with exposure, focus, ISO settings and camera shake but I only got this camera last month and I was keen to see what the video was like in low light.

Thanks for reading, hope it doesn't offend too many eyes

definitely looks a lot better than pre wrap man! and I've known a few people who have done the whole self wrap thing, and it's suprising how good people can get it for how cheap

I dont know why but the rear seems to be sitting a lot better than the front

Cheers dude. Annoying thing about the E38 is they have absolutely huge front arches height wise. The rears are easy to get close to the rim but the fronts have a massive amount of clearance. I could probably get another 10-15mm out of the coilovers at the front, but i've already smashed stuff off the floor as it is, wouldn't last long around here if it went lower.

First world problems. Could always raise the rear..?

Nice car! Good to see you just stick it out with ideas!

        There's usually 2 camps.

Equal guard clearance and awesome rake [IMO, these just look awesome with rake]

Or the Parallel sill/ground clearance and this weird optical illusion of anti-rake, take off stance

There's no real middle ground because either way they just have something not quite right in relation to the wheels, the ground or both.

        Edit:
I'm gonna go for the rake look... and sneak some exhaust side pipe exiting at the front of the rear wheels. V-band flanges ordered and waiting on delivery! No suspension or wheels just yet though, so no thread.

That wrap is pretty cool. Would be even better if it was glossy, but still cool.

              Cheers guys!

@jazig.k I think I'm in team rake, going to see if there's anything I can do to drop the front a bit more. I like the tyre sizes, I don't like the reverse rake optical illusion. Side pipes would be amazing but I'd be locked up forever here for it, such is life

@dr.ak yeah glossy would be cool but I paid £200 for 30m, beggars can't be choosers haha

I'll get knocked too, but I've got a preface lift with black lowers like you, so I'll try to sneak some matte black tips out. Will all depend on how it all sounds too. Side pipes can be pretty harsh to daily with without a couple mufflers and I will only be running the resonator in the center. Will be just something to do for fun that I haven't seen yet.

What wheel and tyre sizes are you running?
How many meters did it take to wrap the car? Not the whole 30m I'm guessing.
Can you post more about your Kindle set up? I want the OBC, but I want some modern connectivity... It's pretty much one or the other with these cars...

Make a thread here on Stanceworks asap. There is not enough E38 godliness on this forum.

I've a bazillion pics here there and everywhere, I'll try and cobble something together when I get chance.

With regards to the Kindle, do you have an OBDII car or does it still have the 20 pin connection under the bonnet? If it's fully OBDII you could use Torque to good effect, mines not though so I decided fuck it, it's going in the bin. The nav died anyway so none of it was working
