    • For a few years now ive bounced back and forth about which car id rather own for, a mk4 supra like your brothers, or an nsx like you. You are currently swaying my mind heavily.. Im extremely detail oriented as well and your build connects with me on a spiritual level. fuck this is good.

      • Im also curious as to how you will mount the brakes. The new nsx hasn't been out for very long, although owners of the older generation tend to have deeper pockets than the average joe, so i wouldn't be surprised if someone has already bought a set and done the conversion.

My guess is he'll choose a rotor that already has a hub that works, and then build a custom bracket accordingly to mount it onto the hub.

Not too difficult. Same way people run 18Z Porsche Calipers on VWs and what-not.

Make the calipers fit the brake rotors, and then take those measurements and make them fit the car.

yeah to be honest you couldn't go wrong either way, the supra is nice because everyone makes parts for it no messing around with custom parts. Over here they are significantly cheaper as well (like a third of the price of an nsx). Yeah there is a chap who lives over here who publicly posts all the restoration work he does on NSX's so learning where to look for faults is made a lot easier.

ermm basically I'm modelling everything up on CAD then will make a bracket when I have a datum to work with. Probably choose a rotor and hub that's available and then make the bracket to suit, don't know yet. As far as a I know I was the first guy to order these from Honda, I even had to give them a chassis code as they wouldn't let me just buy them :S they must have deep pockets considering how much parts are...dayum that was an eye opener. I'll get myself a nice single cam eg civic hatch after this

ha its like you've done this before :P yup basically that method. I may have to get a custom hub made but I don't think that's too expensive I don't think. Well not in comparison to the calipers anyways :S

Haha, yeah. I've done this a few times before with the 18Z Calipers on VWs and what-not.

Custom Hub should be relatively easy. What size are the new NSX Brakes from factory? 380x32 or something?

You can probably find some used BBK Rotors of some sort, or at least the hats, and then you can approach Coleman Racing. They can custom make Rotor Rings of any size essentially to work with the hats. Could save a bit of money that way.

Or, if you have access to all that, getting some custom hats made aren't too pricy.

the brakes on the 2017 nsx are 368 front and 361 rear, but are carbon ceramic.

I'll be running around 355 all round I think if I can get them behind the regamasters,

yeah, what I'm doing is getting the important measurements and producing a cad model, then mess around with wheel/suspension clearance etc until I'm happy. Ill then see if I can get an off the shelf hat from somewhere, if not Coleman were going to be my first port of call.

got a few other bits to sort on the car before hand so will probably be a while before I get to it properly but the model is well on the way.

Might not be able to get the 355MM behind the 17" Regas. From my experience with them, they only clear a "Standard" size of brakes.

                          17" - 330MM
                          18" - 355MM

But, maybe you'll get lucky if anything, it all really depends on the caliper in all honesty.

                              • Soooo after much fannying around and not doing very much over the past week or so I finally managed to tear myself away from various distractions and actually went back to finish the job.

There are a few bits and pieces that I wanted to inspect / replace whilst the driveshafts are out and the gear oil is drained:

There is a small mesh cylinder in the gearbox that catches any debris, which is held in with this flange and o ring.

The master technicians amongst you will notice that the flange in this is broken and there is a nice shiny one from honda right next to it. Turns out that not being removed for 25 years, along with trying to be removed in -3 temperatures will snap this in two. Who knew?

anyways the mesh itself was clean and had no gearbox parts in it, so I'm counting that as a win overall. This was the before picture. It was properly cleaned and inspected before i reinstalled it (see above picture).

I also bought a new oil seal as a "whilst its out" measure (the most dangerous phrase of any car project).

luckily the old manky driveshaft nut served as a perfect tool to insert the new oil seal.

and sitting nice and flush in its new home:

Looking at the back of the hub, where the speed sensor sits, reinforces my belief that this car has never seen any wet weather. Usually this area is covered in crap and dirt, this is just brake dust.

and after a good clean, including the sensor itself:

and finally the shaft back in its place:

I also bought some new crush washers for the drain bolt and fill bolt.

I cant torque anything until both sides are done as the suspension bolts need to be tightened under suspension load, so ill move onto the other side as all this needs to be repeated for the other shaft
