  • e28's slow rise from the grave

So I bought an e28 in august, as my first car purchase because of a rotting e21 (a gift from my brother). I bought it not running and stuck in a field so I had issues looking under it. But anyways, there was widespread failure of....well just about everything structural up front.
Both frame rails were basically gone, the sway bar was barely attached on one frame rail! Alongside a leaky gas tank, a few electrical hiccups, as well as a busted ignition switch, a great start to car buying

I only apparently got pictures of one side of the frame rail, and already got the body repairs, so no more photo ops for that part
and so began the restoration....and hopefully a pretty dope build

(sorry for shitty quality photos, I'm a broke college student)

First and foremost lets look at the free "first car purchase" gifts from my brother (off of his m20 build) a bigger intake manifold off a 325i,as well as new maintenance parts like new cap/rotor

And of course we can't forget the new eta head I bought! I couldn't find a 731 head anywhere, and I didn't want to change out the pistons for the 885 head to maintain compression, so the eta head and all it's glory is most likely going to get larger valve ports, and if I can find a better cam, that too.....I have to find one though!

I couldn't get under the car, so all I could manage was interior photos of the repaired floor pans, underside frame repair job photos will come soon enough!

I should also note the car has been sitting for about a month since I got it back from the shop, and the floor pans are already rusting on the bottom...he did a good repair job, just a terrible undercoating job

Okay! second look at the now rusty underside repairs! As well as the wheels that were one of the deciding factors in buying the car

        new rusty floor pans!

a rusty floor pan wouldn't be right without a magnificent rusty frame rail alongside it!

anyway, I plan to order a new fuel tank by friday, all the prices I found were around the same for a new one, even at the dealership, so I'm just going to order from there unless someone can find a cheaper one. Intake is going on this weekend, old one is coming off tomorrow morning before work hopefully (assuming I don't sleep in)
hopefully everything will be well and good to put back together by the end of the month

Ouch, that rust is horrible. Glad to see you're making the effort to bring this car back to it's former glory. Schwarz is definitely one of my favorite e28 colors, black brings out the beauty of these cars so well. Good luck moving on with this thing

Mine is pretty clean but it still had rust. It's amazing how well the undercoating hides rust on these things. You think you just bought a rust free car, but then you take an angle grinder to the floor and it just falls apart.

update: I changed direction, and decided that the head is getting bigger valve ports and bigger intake ports, so off to the machine shop! Good news is everything under the head looks good. Pictures to follow tonight!

So since my brother was in town I was helping him with his 1jz swap, I never got to post my photos, so here they are!
Also if does anyone know if there needs to be any other sort of modification to the 200 cast heads for them to take the i cams? I know there needs to be oil flows drilled into the bearings that don't have them, but other than that I haven't found anything. any help would be appreciated

the head and I/E manifolds removed

and there's the head all taken down for the machine shop, valves will be taken out later before I take it there

and a overview of what went down
