  • The Never Ending Project (Mk2 Golf)

Hi Guys, Thought i'd share my mk2 with anyone that might care

The car was meant to be a mint low miles 1.6 Ryder with 2 previous owners, it was bought with the intention of just cleaning it up and keeping it all original. (with the exception of lowering it)

And it was 90% mint. However the 10% was with the engine which seemed to have minimal servicing throughout its life, with no mention of the cambelt ever being changed. So obviously a full service was first to be done. After servicing the engine, I split the carb flange and that opened up many more problems which led it to not running right. So long story short it was doing like 14mpg in a 1.6 and I was bored of trying to find the solution.

I then decided if its going to bankrupt me when I drive it, I may as well have fun with it. So I purchased a KR and some GSXR750 carbs to put in over the Christmas break.

I wanted the conversion to be as quick as possible, so gathered all the parts and rebuild the KR before it was put in to minimise any problems I may have, with the idea of completing the swap on a couple of weekends.

I parked it up end of November

Within a couple of weekends the engine was in and idleing "OK"

However it wouldn't move due to the putting the wrong clutch in (literally 2mm difference in the spindle size) So the engine had to come out

It is now March and back together and has only managed to drive a whole 9 miles home from the garage at a maximum of 3k

I am now onto setting up the carbs, which is taking its time partly because I dont know what im doing and partly due to having to remove the whole carb set up to adjust anything on them even an idle screw!

                Thanks,
Yeah its on coilovers, but may have to higher it up as the 16v sit lower than the 8v and the carbs are already brushing the bonnet without an engine raise

Yeah pal, Ive re drilled them to 1.7mm but think I need to set the float height as the bowls are holding to much fuel

The bottom of this page has been really helpful http://dubberz.com/forum/shop-talk/bike-carb-build/

Had the weekend on the car, managed to fit a new dash as the old one was cracked to hell

Engine side I managed to get it running great however when the engine and fuel pump are switched off after running up to temp, No4 carb still fils up with fuel for around 2 mins and eventually bubbles out of two holes at the front (I think are air jets) If anybody has any idea how to stop this that would be great!
