  • E86 / Z4 Coupe (short story)

    Hi, im Gavin.

I will start as most do, with a couple of rubbish pics of my previous rides, and the reasons I sold a pair of legend investment cars with bags of power for a fairly common and not very fast BMW.

Firstly I built this 944, converted the original engine to low comp with forged rods ect and a huge BorgWarner turbo, dog leg gearbox, cage, 968cs chassis and 2 bar of boost. The thing was an animal. (pics are deliberately shit, il get upset if I see it properly)

At the same time, I also had this Audi S2 Nothelle N300. (one of about 20 made) It was chipped RS2 spec with larger turbo, exhaust ect, somewhere between 380-400hp, fast and sounded lovely, but didn't seem fast or aggressive compared with the 944. It was the Nothelle demo car and was full of nice rare parts.

On with the new car, I wanted the above 2 cars since I was about 14, but they really disrupted my life, constant garage time ran me down, fuel consumption that would make a dodge charger ashamed and its a bit embarrassing both have their engines out and you need to get a bus (yes, more than once) I felt I was missing out on life while laying under cars and burning cash big time. As cool and fun as they were, something had to change.

So, I wanted reliable, decent MPG, I only like German cars...needs to have some go, nothing obvious obviously I love cars so the lines are important - Honestly knew I was going for another BMW, and E86 was the only one that seemed right. Nearly bought an E46 M3, tbh there are so many near where I live it put me off, id love another E36 M3, but im off older cars for a while, I want to do some big Europe trips.

    I wanted a TI Silver E86 sport non M.

The search found me this very clean 6 speed 3.0SI.

The 265ps N52 3.0 is no power house but it is a nice engine and feels really matched to that car.

Now this build is not going to be as passionate or involved as my other builds, I just want a smart looking car.

Being the sport, it has a black headliner, M thick steering wheel, sports heated memory seats, and slightly lower suspension.

I am not looking to slam it as I want it to be able to board ferrys and live on bad tarmac, so H&R springs with my existing sports shocks will do, its a 35mm drop.

And I think these cars need 19" wheels to make sense of the shape.
I got on and ordered everything with some P Zero Silvers. I want this to be a driving machine.

I removed the badges and tinted the white part of the rear lens red, and a stubby aerial I think it looks a lot cleaner-

I had a quick flick through the 944 build, and it's nice that you kept it all period correct

Looking forward to seeing the Z4 together, Neil has well nice one on here

      Staying tuned for updates

The next thing is that grey grille, its nasty. I don't have a pic of before, but here is one on another Z4.

These were promptly swapped for black ones from an earlier car!

There is not much left of that thread, imageshack deleted all the pics and I never got the thread up to date, there is a bit of it on my instagram (gavsey).
This project should not get out of hand tbh, just a smart look.

Here are a few crap pics of how it sits, I need to do some decent ones but never get time.

LOOKS EPIC AT NIGHT - THE PHOTOSHOOT MAY BE A NIGHT SHOOT.

My favourite thing about this car is its not too radical, I can drive it anywhere anytime and as hard and fast as I like, no rubbing, insane grip and great cornering speeds. I drove to Gorzow in Poland from near London in the UK and it was such an easy fast journey.
I keep wondering what people are staring at as I don't see the car as particularly special but people seem to like it so that's a bonus.

Yes id be mad to buy the ESS supercharger kit instead of just getting a Z4 M, but that's what I think i'm going to do.
Why didn't I buy an M? Twice the price (£20k vs £10k) and Im not keen on 4 exhausts on a 6 cylinder car. I am not too keen on the bumper and the performance is not worth 10k to me considering it wont feel fast after the 944. I like the M bonnet and the LSD would be nice, but if I feel the need I can source these parts.

The charger kit is £3600 and every source quotes different power but 340 seems realistic and would be useful in this chassis.

^is this just madness? back where I started with oily fingers and no money? Hmmm...
