  • Bastard Child: 318ti Daily Driver

Alright, so bare with me on this first post. Photo quality will be all over the place and I have a lot of catching up to do. After this initial post things should be a lot more consistent, and photos will be higher quality!

So here's my 1998 BMW 318ti, factory 5 speed manual in Ascotgrun. The compact chassis is pretty much the bastard child of the E36 family. For those not familiar with it, it has an E36 front end, and an E30 rear subframe, along with some other oddities (like the dash and hatchback). For the most part, I don't think this car gets the love it deserves. They're a lot of fun, and crazy practical. I suppose the rear view is an acquired taste, but ultimately I think it's a nice looking car.

I picked up this one relatively cheap as a daily driver. Previous owner had taken pretty good care of it, but it found its way to Arizona from Minnesota. The result is some rust patches forming on the drivers side quarter and rear panels. It was also sitting on Raceland suspension when I bought it. No bueno, really not a fan of their stuff. "But it's cheaaap", you might say. No, fuck you, it's garbage. (I really don't like Raceland as you'll see)

This is how it looked when I picked it up. No grille, Style 2 wheels, and some other minor flaws. But it did have an M3 front bumper, color matched side skirts, and working A/C (a first for me).

After bringing it up to mechanical spec (brakes, oil, etc.) I took care of the tint. Shop did a pretty poor job to be honest, and I'll likely have it redone within the year. But at least it was no longer a fish bowl.

I found a cheap grille on Amazon, thought it would be better then nothing. Really hoping to find a stock chrome grille however. That's on the list to-do.

The radio was taken care of. The install was initially spot on, but I took it back to get some other work done and they messed up the trim ring and it won't sit right now. Still need to get that fixed.

At first I told myself I wasn't going to do anything to this car that it didn't absolutely need. But we all knew that wasn't going to last. I had some M3 Vaders in my E30, which weren't seeing much use. So I ripped them out and dropped them in the ti just to see how it looked. Ended up leaving them there permanently. Despite the weight they are my favorite BMW seats. Mine happen to have suede inserts, and were mint (until the audio shop destroyed the leg bolster on the passenger seat).

So that's how it sat. I thought I was really done at this point, I wanted to focus on my E30. But some friends and I decided we were going to Bimmerfest this year, and I knew the E30 wouldn't be even close to ready for that. So I decided to go crazy with the ti.

The first thing I ended up doing was installing some Rally lights. I bought them off a friend whose awesome Jetta was totaled by an asshole who hydrolocked it. So a little bit of his car lives on in my ti. Turned out to be a relatively easy install, although the LED switch inside the car gave us some trouble.

I then decided the Style 2 wheels weren't doing it for me. So I bought a set of my favorite OEM wheels ever, Style 5s (BBS RC090). Wrapped them in a 205/40/17 Falken and slapped them on. Definitely needs some spacing out, but that'll happen after what's to come. That brings us up to date for the most part.

So here's the plans before Bimmerfest. Sort the awful suspension, fix the crack-whore fitment, and put on some pieces that I have really wanted. So far I have ordered and recieved my full Condor Speed Shop solid mount kit. Dog approved I guess.

Aaaand quality pictures from here on out. I wasn't ever planning on doing a build thread, so most of it was iPhone quality stuff.

Yesterday I picked up some Sedan M3 mirrors off a car being parted out. They were covered in black plastidip so I tried peeling it off. One went ok, but the other was caked on. I soaked them in Goo Gone, and wiped off the crap.

They cleaned up pretty nice. They are Boston Green underneath, which is nice but not the color I need. I ordered a can of color matched paint, so they will be sprayed to match the car before they go on.

I also picked up a Euro steering wheel. Got it at a pretty good price, although the leather is a little worn. The only thing that was bugging me was the chrome trim ring, so I plastidipped that black. I figure now that I know how to remove the stuff well, I can always reverse it if I change my mind.

And that's actually 100% up to date. The current plan is after a massive meet next weekend, the car will go up on jackstands, in my friend's garage, to get some major work done. New bushings, E30 diff, new clutch and some other small things. I'll be replacing the awful, horrible, no good, I-****-these-so-much Racelands with some CAtuned Coilovers. I have a set on my E30 and love them. I'll get the steering wheel rewrapped, and fix some interior bits that need doing. Beyond that, fix the fitment and enjoy the car.

Sorry for the massive first post, but that's about 6-7 months of ownership covered at once. More to come soon!

    looks nice!

the m3 sedan mirrors fit on compact door? Somewhere in my mind I remember that they don't,... or maybe the coupe ones don't.

Looks great so far ! I was very tempted to throw racelands on mine just to get it low, but just went with the H&R setup.

The compact is a little weird because it uses all sedan front end parts, mirrors included. Nearly made that mistake when I first got the car haha. It gets even weirder when you get to the rear subframe, that's all E30.

Yeah, compacts share everything sedan/saloon/touring wise until around halfway down the door as compact has exactly the same front half of the frame, but the door is similar in length to a coupe/cabrio. So the A pillar is the same as a saloon/sedan meaning an M3 sedan/saloon mirror will fit nicely, as I'm sure you've found out! Side skirts are exact same between all variants coupe, cabrio, sedan/saloon, touring and compact. Wheelbases between all variants are the same also (contrary to popular belief of compacts being shorter!).
As far as I've heard in some places, the compact does have one difference up front to the rest (other than headlights which are also different), the bulkhead is supposedly more shared, but not identical, with an e30 which could explain why the dash is more e30 like and e36 dashboards are a bitch to fit. Main reason to mention about the bulkhead is it supposedly means that the whole bulkhead is about an inch or 2 further back which means more bay room. Not sure if this is actually the case, just some things i have heard floating around the Drifters in Scotland and on a couple forums.

If my works internet security allowed me to see photos that aren't from photobucket, i'm sure I'd be able to say, sweet compact man! Just means I'll actually have to bother my ass to find my laptop to check it out when i'm home... I have no idea where my laptop is... If anyone has seen it then that's cool

Not my compact, just a quick paint from what i could find that isn't blocked at work! Exterior wise all these parts are the same, obviously, you wont manage to use any other doors, but shows an idea that up until the end of a saloon doors length they are the same (minus the handle cutout)

Thanks Dutch! I always wondered why they changed the dash between chassis, but that makes a lot of sense. I'm not familiar with a standard E36 engine bay, but it'd be interesting to get some measurements and see if there really is more space. I wouldn't be surprised, that's why I called it the bastard child, BMW really built a strange car with the compacts.

Also minor update, picked this up today. E28 M5 3.45 LSD. Previous owner swapped on the E30 diff cover, and put an AKG bushing. I'll likely be taking that out and putting my Condor one in just to keep everything the same. Stoked on this find though, gear ratio is the same so it won't be annoying to drive at speed.

Still need to get a clutch (single mass flywheel conversion time) and looks like it's finally time to replace the driveshaft. Also potentially a change in plans on the suspension, depending on time constraints leading up to Bimmerfest. That's all TBD though.

So a friend of mine offered to take some roller shots before my car goes under the knife. Thought it would be a good way to close the first chapter with this car. He did an incredible job, and I encourage you all to follow him on Instagram (@schreerluck).

Also went to the Arizona Instagram meet tonight. If any of you are local, you'll know what I'm talking about. Hoping some photos of my car crop up from that. I've been lazy about taking my own photos lately, but I'll get back to it.

Tomorrow morning the car goes to my friend's house where we'll spend a week redoing the Condor Speed Shop bushings, clutch/single mass flywheel and some other misc. bits. Should be a lot of content from that.

                          Thank you!

So today I tore into the car today. The original plan for this week was to do bushings and clutch so I had time to order the coilovers I want and slap them on later. However the Racelands kind of... Fell apart? So I think the plan is to order some BC Coilovers this week and hope they arrive in time to get the car rolling again.

This surface rust was kind of indicative of the entire tear down. The car isn't rotten, but just rusty enough to make everything seized.

Now I knew the bushings were shot, but this was ridiculous. I could see through the diff bushing.

We ended up tearing pretty much everything off the front end.

The CAB were equally as shot, but I had fun burning them out.

The parts are starting to pile up. Can you spot the particularly fucked up Raceland spring?

We ended up getting stuck on pulling the ebrake cable out. That's all the stands between us getting the rear subframe out. I have to make a trip out to the bone yard and get some E30 axles and I'm waiting on other parts to get in. So yeah we made a fair bit of progress, but were definitely slowed down by seized bolts everywhere.

                          Updates soon to come.

Yes, yes, and more yes. I Love Ti's. One of my bucket list cars is to have an M3 swapped ti. I don't know if there is some slang term for those but they are so cool and my neighbor up the street has two showroom quality ti's that are s52 swapped.

Thanks! I don't think there's any technical term for it, but I like calling them Mini M3s. I'd love to swap this ti someday, as fun as it is now, it really does lack in power.

                              ----

So a small update. Remember when I said I wouldn't be doing anymore iPhone photos? Yeah sorry, got to my friends garage and realized I left my camera at home. Fortunately (or unfortunately really) progress has been slow so there aren't many iPhone photos.

We finally got the subframe out. We had a bit of downtime this week, and got it all down to one subframe bolt. It was 100% frozen in place and we could not get it off. So I chopped it. Not ideal, but it had to be done.

We broke it all down, and celebrated by burning more things.

We discovered there was basically no fluid in the diff (thankfully being replaced), and obviously that the shocks are completely shot (also being being replaced). Tomorrow we'll be cleaning up the trailing arms and subframe and attempting to press in the bushings. I still need to make a run to the boneyard and get some E30 axles. I pick up my coilovers on Saturday I believe and that should be it for acquiring parts. Then it's just a matter of putting it all back together.

So it's a minor update, but progress has been made!
