  • VW MK1 Rabbit 16v Lysholm build

I daily drove my 84 Rabbit ABA swap for about a year until this past February, when a series of increasingly inopportune electrical issues forced me to get a newer car as my daily until I had time to fix it.

I covered it for the winter, and in April started ripping out wiring to start fresh.

It turned out the wiring was a total disaster, such as horn tied to parking light harness, fuel pump wiring wrapped around steering rack, etc, so since wiring is my weak suite I enlisted one of the master techs from the VW dealer I work for (I'm in sales). Pic is of wife steering while the car was winched onto the trailer.

Fast forward three months of working on the car during off hours, discovering the brake booster and master cylinder were shot, sourcing a fuel rail that actually worked, etc, and the car now runs and drives! Drove it home from Martinsburg WV to northern VA last week.

Drove it to work last week to get turn signals and horn wired correctly, and to put it on the lift to fix parking brake cables so it'll pass inspection.

I had originally planned to run 13" Compomotive Turbos that I picked up in June at Vagfair, and put the car on air, but when a coworker started parting his hoard of parts intended for a mk2 golf syncro, I changed plans.
As of two days ago, I am now the owner of a bare 16v block, built 16v head, and a Lysholm supercharger.

I hadn't budgeted for all of that, so it'll be a while before I have cash to piece together the rest of what I need, e.g. trans, diff, brakes, wheels to clear brakes, upgraded suspension, etc, but I'll be very excitedly posting here in the meantime.

The Goal: 250whp, full interior, all done by mk1 madness next summer.

Nice find there. Same color as my golf L and also same wheel color I'm going for. Here for some inspiration.

Thanks! Mine's originally a Rabbit L 1.6na diesel, haha. Two owners back, guy rescued it from a junkyard and put an ABA in it. Last owner was a mutual friend, sold it to get his '58 barn find Beetle.

Which wheels are you looking for?

Thanks! Unfortunately with winter coming progress will be slow except on the motor itself, but I can't wait! I'll be getting the tech-53 bbk and sourcing a trans once the main part of the motor is put together, and when weather permits will be working on putting the interior back together too. It's bare except for carpet, headliner, and front seats right now!

I currently have on it a set of Oz MSW 14" basket weaves. Just going to have them refurbed and widened to 15" 8.5j. Probably going with the city lights theme upfront to contrast the gold/yellow faced rims.

The Lysholm on its own is a great score. I want one for my '67 Volvo 122s.

That sounds awesome, haha. That's about the wheel spec I'll probably be going with - just got quoted H&R Ultra Lows and a 4-piston Wilwood BBK 10.1" from tech-53 yesterday, so I'll probably get those ordered once I get my Christmas bonus. Then internals for the motor so my friend and I can start getting that put together.

                  I know!

Also, the 122 is amazing - I had a 244DL for a while, thing was a tank. I've always liked the looks of the 1-series cars better though.

There is a used Lysholm for sale with a bunch of accessories on the VW Mk2/Mk3 facebook page. I think he's asking 2500 or so. I can pm you a link if you're interested

Fun quick update! Sold the Compomotives today - and picked up a Wilwood 4-piston BBK! Got a quote for H&R Ultra Lows too, so those will be ordered and installed along with the brakes sometime closer to Christmas.

Also, having leak issues with the SRI manifold I have, so may swap that back to the stock mk3 manifold so I can at least drive the car while the 16v is being built. Block will be sent to a machine shop shortly to get checked over, then the real fun begins!

Small things...bumpers back on (retaining clips ordered for fenders/quarters to keep them straight). New plates came in too! Should be road legal by next week.

Once I get my Christmas bonus in two weeks, internals will be ordered, along with a trans and diff...
