  • Mercedes W114...

I guess its about time I started a thread, I've been lurking long enough!

My names Ellis I'm 21 I'm from Cardiff, I have a vehicle restoration company.

As you might've guessed my car is a Merc W114. 1971 to be exact!

I bought it about a year ago for the pricey sum of £500 with a full years mot and ££££'s of receipts for work carried out to the car (incidentally the work was carried out by my previous employers)
To date i have spent about £200 on it...

I hadn't seen the car for about two years and he rocks up to the workshop in it, the paint is flat, few rust bubbles, interior a bit worn and running on 5 cylinders.
He tells me he's got no space for it as he's just moved and he wants to sell it as is but he doesn't know whats its worth. Asked us to look over the car to see what it would need.
I didn't even look at the car and made him an offer later that day and the rest is history!

Now ideally the car needed painting! however i wanted to get some use out the car so i just machine polished the paint and brought it back to life.
Then to sort out the running problem, it was a suspected burnt out valve from the noise it was making, but turned out to be a duff spark plug! Lucky me! no head rebuild necessary!

Since then the car has had a few services I've done around 15,000 miles in it, used it as a daily most of the time in all weathers too, she's not a garage queen!
Me and the girlfriend decided to road trip through france and along the south coast in her too, we had a few hiccups along the way but nothing major!
New battery failed at the first services on the auto route and then the top hose blew in St Tropez, and some front tyres was needed! nothing major to report though.
    But less talk more pictures!!
    The day I Bought it

They left it out front too! okay not quite the front but it wasn't put round the back!

Found a french mechanic to buy a piece of hose from to replace the split top house!
And I shit you not the guy on the right was italian... there was a welshman, a frenchman and an Italian in a garage...one says to the other...

And then once i got back i did the thing i said i would never do to it.. Modify it.

so thats where we are at!
Okay the wheels are a marmite thing, i wasn't sure at first but they have definitely grown on me!

I actually think the wheels look pretty sweet on it and that's coming from somebody who doesn't like 3 spoke wheels a whole lot. Excited to see more!

You must never remove those wheels. They look mint. Great looking car. How bars the rust?

Jhermes - thanks man, do you have any pictures of yours?

Peeunit - haha they'll only come off if they need too! Rust wise it's okay but not great, two front wing bottoms, rear arch started to go and all four doors have a bit of rust at the bottom. Sills and floors all good though! Oh and a small hole on the bulkhead...

I've got a few rust free panels and some NOS repair panels though.

If all goes to plan I'll be pulling her apart to a bare shell for a 'minor' restoration.
