  • W123 content inside!

    Hi,

First of all, I apologize for my bad english. I'm a native french canadian. I hope that my bad grammar will not offend you.

My name is Maxime, I'm 22 years old and I'm living in Rimouski, Quebec, Canada. I've been on SW for a while now without posting anything. I've been reading a lot of builds and finally decided to create my own build tread.

I had a few projects before this one. I owned a couple of VW. Stanced mk4, bagged mk3, passat b6, audi A4 but never did a project car like this one (I will post pictures of my past projects later).

It's a 1985 Mercedes 300D Saloon. I bought the car from my mechanic 2 years ago. After harassing I'm during one year, he finally decided to sell it to me. He owned the car for the last 15 years and never drove it in the winter. Plus, he did a full respray 10 years ago. The car had around 400 000miles on the clock but a low mileage engine was included in the deal. Plus, he would help me putting the engine in it. All of this for approximatively 1500US. What a great deal! The car was totally stock and in really good shape. Unfortunately, I ain't got pictures of it when i bought it. Over the winter, we put the engine in place and tried make it run perfectly. I did a few little mods to the car like cutting the coils and throwing some white-walls on it with hubcap.

I didn't really took pictures from the beginning until today. Don't worry, I will take an incredibly huge amount of pictures for every single steps.

When I finally got it running on white-walls and lowered a little bit:

Drove it like this a few days and decided to lower it a little more:

Thrown a Nardi in it to replace the old, ugly steering wheel:

Did a couple of mods/maintenance to it, here's the list :

-Replaced the old factory radio by an alpine one.
-Replaced all the speakers with kickers in the front and infinity in the back
-Replaced all 4 shocks with sach sports ones
-Blasted and painted all 4 calipers, replaced the discs and pads
-Replaced the starter motor and alternator
    -Replaced the battery
-Replaced a few bushings and other things
    -Replaced every fluids

That's it for summer 2014. Didn't had the chance to drive the car a lot, having some issues with the timing of the fuel pump and decided that I would fix that during the winter.

Here's a picture dump of the car:

By the end of the summer, oil started to leak from the engine. Those old benz are always leaking oil but the huge stains in my driveway were telling me that something was wrong with it. Did a quick diagnostic and the result was : failure of the rear crank seal. Normal thing for an engine that sat like 20 years under a blanket in the garage. If you know these cars, it's a real PITA to do in place. You must remove the whole engine. Anyway, it wasn't that bad because I had a few thing to do to it.

So, I pulled out the engine by the end of the summer and put the car in storage. What was supposed to be a simple crank seal job turned to be a complete rebuilt. You know what it is...

I ordered a complete gasket kit, painted every single part and replaced anything that wasn't too expensive with new parts. The internals were in pretty good shape due to the low mileage (90 000 miles).

I'll let the pictures talk by themselves:

As you can see, I did a pretty decent job. Sorry for the crappy cellphones pictures.

A clean engine like this was deserving a nice engine bay to sit in. Sent the car to one of my friend to do a respray of it and retouch some area of the car while he was at it. Shaving wasn't an option. I wanted to keep it as OEM as possible.

Result : really happy for the price. He charged me like 400US for the job. Couldn't ask for a better result. It was the time for the engine to go back in the bay. Did it a few weeks ago. Pictures will come soon. Still trying to fix some little things like deleting my egr correctly and replug some vacuum.

    My plans for now :

Make it run like new, put a nice set of wheel on it and maybe bagging it. I'm not really sure for the bags because it's a little bit complicated for those models but nothing that can't be fixed and because of the stupid laws here in Quebec.

In case you are wondering which type of wheels I'll put on it, here's two set I did during the winter but that never showed up on the car because I changed my mind.

    #wheelporn:

First set : OZ fittipaldi 16x7.5
Polished them, powdercoated the barrels, put some 24k bolts on them. Sold them because they weren't wide enough for me.
Second set : BBS Rs 17x9
Fully hand polished, brand new hardware and everthing else. Chrome powdercoated barrels, etc. Sold them because 17 inch is too damn big for those cars and 9 inch in the front is stupid.

Now looking for a set of 16 inch RS in decent specs to rebuild.

That's it for now. Updates should show up quickly.

    Cheers!

It was the plan. But after being looking on the internet for months, I find out that 16 inches was the way to go. The next set of RS's will probably be way much better anyway!

              Time for an update!

First of all, thanks guys for the nice comments! Didn't made a lot of progress during the past week. The weather wasn't really nice but I made a few things. During the past winter, I sold the hubcaps and white-walls, only remaining with OEM bundts. Because I will only build my next set of wheel by the beginning of the winter, I decided to do a refresh to them. I sent them to one of my friends who is doing powdercoating here. Should get them by the beginning of the next week. I also ordered new tires for them. Should do the trick until next car season.

Here's how the car is currently sitting. At least, she got some nice company form Germany

Stuffed the inside with tires and parts. If she's not running, at least, she can be used as a storage

Wheel's aren't the biggest deal. Still trying to figure out how to block my EGR valve. I will take some measurement this week-end and draw some kind of plan. One of my friends is machinist and he should be able to do something for me. I have some great friends hehe!

For now, the engine bay is looking like this, almost finished. Still need to tie up some wires and vacuums but no big deal here.

Did a few other things like putting some insulation under the hood. The insulation pad of these old Merc is always falling. I used some 3M spray glue to make it hold but it not worked properly. Decided to use some house aluminium isolation foil. It's like the Dynamat but for 1/4 of the cost. Really satisfied with how it turned.

Replaced the trims under the tail-lights. They were in really bad shape. Found some replacement one at a local junkyard. Looking way much better.

In one week I'll be on vacation. I'll will have plenty of time to work on the Benz. Here are some things that I'll have to care about.

Brake system have previously been done, by me. I'll need to redo it because it's now looking like they are 30 years old. Disc and pads are still brand new but a little bit rusted. I will clean them. The calipers will be repainted with por-15.

Driver seat is in really bad condition. During the winter, I bought 2 complete front seats that are in immaculate condition. I took only the leather. The problem is that my interior is cream and the seats that I bought are palomino. I'm currently looking to dye them but don't know which product use and which color would be the good one.

Same thing for the upper part of the seat. As you can see in this picture, new leather have been used but the color isn't matching and the texture of the leather isn't the same at all.

I got a few other things to do but you'll see later.

And, here's the thing that I am the most happy with. Old merc were leaving the factory with a sticker in the front windshield. These stickers were like the final touch on the car. You can see the signature of Mr. Daimler on it. It's like for the Shelby's, in a certain way. Because my windshield has previously been replaced, the sticker wasn't there anymore. Scored one on ebay! REALLY happy. My intention was to apply it at the end of the project but, because a project car is never really ending, I put it on right now!

              I know, I'm a freak

              That's it for now!

                Sall Update!

Received my wheels by the beginning of the week. My friend did an awesome job with the powdercoat. Bought some white-wall tires and brand new wheel studs . Really happu with the look.

Should install them on the car this week-end.

Close view of the paint job :

Center-caps are missing because i need to paint them before installing them.

                    Thanks!

White-Walls were great but they suits the older models better. Those new wheels are going to be more ''period correct'' in my opinion. For the next set of wheels, I'm not fixed yet. I have a soft spot for BBS Rs but maybe I'll look for something a little bit different.
