  • SwiftMagic Ae86 build

A few years ago I built a 280z in high school by doing body work and odd jobs. I liked the car a lot but it had a lot of electrical problems and wasn't very reliable.

(heres the build thread for that)
Post your build threads here! Keep us updated on what you're doing in your garage.

I got a job as a CNC machinist and also found out that I had a daughter on the way. So unreliable 2 seater car didn't seem practical.

    February 2011:
I eventually got rid of my Z and picked a 95' 240sx so I could take my daughter for rides when she was older. I fixed the crappy body work that was done by the previous owner and painted it.
bought new coilovers and a KAAZ 2way Lsd.

    Soon I switched from 17's to 16's

Added more camber to the front.

Drifting was fun, but I started getting into more grip/canyon driving. The s14 was good in the mountains, but I wanted a lighter car. Soon I started looking into getting an ae86. I liked the cars when I was a kid and played Tokyo Highway Battle on my PS1. So that was my first choice.

    March 2012
A few months after that I found a SR5 Corolla for sale in Las Vegas and made the trip to check it out.
It was a solid car no rust, Redtop 4age, and Lsd rearend. the only down side was that it didn't run.

I made my own coilovers using Koni struts. Also bought TechnoToyTuning nrca's

I put on my old 280z wheels that I was saving just incase I ever got a ae86.(good thing i kept them)

    November 2013:
I got a trade offer for my s14. The car was a Gts Corolla. It had a rebuilt Bluetop 4age, coilovers, Gts lsd rearend, and slotted/drilled rotors. The body wasn't straight and it had some rust. I went threw with the trade since my ka was already leaking oil and needed a rebuild. Also my s14 was pretty stock at the time and I was going to use the Gts as a parts car for my sr5.

Anyways, I got the Corolla and had to choose to build the Sr5 or Gts. I eventually decided to build the Gts since it was a genuine Gts.(Im still not really sure why I did that lol)

And thats where this build threads starts:

My goal for this build is to have a low car built for grip. Im really into Group A ae86's that was the look I wanted to go for. Heres a few examples:

I swapped everything from my Sr5 to the Gts. The top picture is from the first day I got it, the bottom is day 3 or 4.

Soon after I started to prime the car and clean it up a little bit.

I swapped over my trunk and hood from my Sr5.

Also started to clean up the engine bay

I also put my woodgrain steering wheel from my s14.(I always keep something from all my cars)

(ignore the eBay seats the car came with)

The car stayed this way for about 7 months. I sold my Enkei 92 set (14/15) and threw on my old Appliance wheels I bought for 50 bucks. I also picked up some Battle Version Nrca's for more camber and a little more roll center correction. I took the car to my local mountain to test out the new set up and it was amazing, but I still felt there was more to be done.

I got tired of not having matching wheels so I put my Western Turbines on from my old Z. Also swap the doors from my Sr5 onto my Gts.

I still wasn't satisfied, so I traded those for some 14x7 Appliance mesh wheels. Then I cleaned them up and polished them. I also picked up a Sparco bucket seat for $100

    Old vs New.

I put on my Sr5 fenders and flared them out more.

A week or two later one of my NRCA bolts fell off and my car dropped down while i was driving and ruined my newly finished driver side fender.

I got it fixed and chopped my fenders in half.

Soon after, I put on my bumper trim from my other car. I made a lip out of my Gts bumper trim to make the bumper sit lower.

    Picked up some traction brackets

Then I decided to take my car off the road and address all of the rust issues it had.

    Passenger side rear arch:

At this point the plan was to swap everything back to my Sr5. Soon I found out that I lost the pink slip. I never got around to registering it in my name so I was pretty bummed, but my wife bought me a vintage TRD jacket to cheer me up.

After some planning I chopped out the large dent I couldn't get to from inside of the car.

I also cut my rear arches and added to flares I made thanks to my Sr5.

This is a picture from before the flairs were made, but this is pretty how it looks now. Im still finishing up some of the body work and getting it ready for paint.

    Recently bought a few things.

Thats pretty much where I'm at with this build.

I finally did some work to it after my trip to San Francisco.

I finished up most of the major work, now I just need to wet sand the car and clean up the engine bay slightly.
Hopefully I'll get footage on track or mountain soon.
