I was a snotty 18 year old browsing Craigslist back in 2009 when I came across my coupe. It was in some shanty-ass town near Albany, NY so my father and I took a trip on a whim with cash in hand from western MA. 8 hours later (and too many cycles through Cudi's Man on the Moon), I returned home with the lukewarm hatch, a 2002 C230 Kompressor Sport Coupe.

For those who are unfamiliar with these cars, I really can't blame you. They're the cheapest production Benz ever to reach this side of the pond, and god damn they are hard on the eyes. However, they are supercharged, rear wheel drive, and available with a third pedal.

The 2002 was the only year of the w203 coupe that came equipped with the M111K 2.3l 4cyl. as the 2003 and later models had the M271K(?) 1.8l 4cyl. The '02s are often referred to as "rougher around the edges", but universally accepted as the more powerful of the two.

Anywho, I got a killer deal on the thing. Had 59k on the clock, pulled hard enough to make me giggle, and got good mileage. So far, so good.

This is where the story really begins.

I was driving back from class one day on the highway, and I started hearing a funky noise whenever I let off the gas that sounded like an exhaust leak. Had no idea what it was, and the car was behaving normally so I thought nothing of it.

Until it started getting louder the longer it went on. Welp, turns out thats what a diff sounds like before it explodes. Duly noted. Sourced a new diff with the help of a long-time mechanic friend and had it back on the road the next week. What I didn't know, was that he had sourced a diff out of a 2003 coupe, which, paired with the more powerful M111K, was a LOT more lively. 10/10 recommended.

Then I got a call from a buddy of mine who used to work at a Mercedes Stealership in CT who said a customer had bought a new set of OEM wheels and left behind some beat AMG reps. 45 minutes and $100 later I had some wheels. 17x7.5 et38 square IIRC.

Got tires mounted, some w203 sedan H&R springs (cut to even ride height) , and rattlecanned the wheels Tiffany Blue because I saw it on the internet (lol). I was "that guy".

They came out awful. I mean, really bad. So the next logical step was to make them worse.

Then I found some more garbage wheels on Craigslist, Beyern Mesh LM reps in 17x8 etIDK and 5x120. Stupid. So I spent more money on custom 19mm 5x112-120 adapters. Also got hungry for more low and found some higher rate springs. And cut those too. Stupid strikes again. End result was, however, better. Made the trip to H2Oi for my first time as well.

A close friend of mine had been sitting on a set of Z3M Roadstars for a while, and one day we decided to do a test fit just for fun. Fronts fit great, even after adapters. Rears... not so much. 17x9 et-11 after adapters. The test fit was comical to say the least, and I was flat broke, but I still had total heart-eyes for the Roadstars.

Then we got to drinking, and thinking.

A few weeks go by, and I come across a set of eBay fiberglass flares on Craigslist meant for an e28. The guy was close, and I ended up coming home with them. Did a mock-up the next day, bought myself an angle grinder and some cutting wheels, and started measuring. My car was a hot mess for a long while, going through trimless stages, mismatched wheels, and various repairs. Finally I was able to scrounge up enough money for the Roadstars and by a miracle of sorts, our measurements allowed them to pretty much fit.

This is about where the good stuff stopped. I got all fucky and did more stupid.

Also, I no longer own this car. It's somewhere in Vermont looking like the victim of domestic abuse.

Before the question is inevitably asked, I've been working on getting my long-term project, '84 190e back on the road after some downtime. Recently moved to NH which has slowed progress a fair amount.

I think I met you at H2Oi a couple years ago. If my memory is correct you had a windshield banner along the lines of "My Daddy Fucks Me" or something like that lol

i wouldn't necessarily say those wheels "fit". i don't care for the rear flare only look either.

has potential, curious to see where you take it

Haha yeah, that was me. See the trend of stupid?

I'll start a thread on the w201 eventually. It's stock as can be for the time being, other than a side-exit exhaust, and y'all don't want to see a stock height car.

If anyone is really interested, I'll post some shots of after the car took a turn for the worse.

They didn't fit. They would never "fit", and I knew that. I had plans for body work and running a square set of 17x9 rears, but that changed quickly when some lady plowed into me and totaled the car.

Damn wish you could have finished that! My mom has a 98 slk230 I've always been curious about how it would look "stanced" out.

I've been looking into getting one. They're relatively common in 5spd manual, too, but everyone out in my area is asking waaaaaay too much for them. LIke, upwards of $13k in some cases. I'm sure I'll come across a deal eventually. I picked up my 190e for dirt money

And yeah, I'm familiar with the w203 platform. There are/were a number of dope ones out there. Charlie out in Cali has a white coupe on AccuAir and VIP inspired, and Max (I think he's on here) used to have a silver coupe on CCW Classics. I owned the car for 5 years.

I had plans to find a lip for it, but the genuine Brabus lips are NOT cheap ($600ish) and the replicas are around $250 from some company in the Toronto area. I got a quote for shipping and and almost needed an adult to calm me down.

Also, I feel I should note that the flares were used to cover up some cosmetic damage from when I tapped a guardrail avoiding some wildlife. It even allowed me to cut out the rust affected area and prevent the spread of disease.

I was reading thinking "this would be cool if the rear arches didn't look so small and dumpy. It would be cool with some flares" and then you flared it. Cool car, shoulda kept it.

Here's a quick lowdown on the demise of the car:

Before H2Oi 2013 I did something stupid and put a big ol' wing on the hatch. It looked sorta good from some angles, and like a Schick razor from others. Exhibits A & B:

...and then some mom in a Honda plowed into me and totaled the car. Completely mangled my passenger side fender, bent the frame, and the hit pushed me under the bumper of a truck parked across the street. The corner of the bumper was in my window, and my window was down thankfully or else I would have had a lap full of safety glass. Anyway, took my mirror off and tapped my A pillar.

Cut a deal with insurance to get a check and keep the car with no title work done. Manhandled the fender, put some air in a tire, ripped the flares and wing off, and traded it for a clean title Calypsorot (auto) e36 coupe with some kid in the Burlington area. I later sold that e36 to a good friend who has given it a good home, and I get to drive it every so often. It's been 5spd swapped.

So yeah. I almost wish I had kept it and maybe just turned it into a skidder or something. It had an LSD in it but Mercedes thinks drivers are a hazard to themselves, so ABS, BAS, and ESP are on at all times, and the acclaimed "dyno mode" (all those options OFF) is a total pain to activate. You'll probably get frustrated and punch your center console and break that awful folding cup-holder.

                            ...I'm not bitter.

Not even remotely related to this thread, but the clutch master cylinder I ordered for my w201 just arrived, so expect to see another build thread for that soon. You know, once I get around to throwing more money at it.

Related to this thread, however, I went to go look at another one of these because I'm a glutton for punishment. Found it on CL locally for $2,400, but the car ended up being a total pig so I passed on it. If I ever end up in another one of these coupes, I'm going to make sure it's super clean and/or the C320 model.
