  • Not really a build... Audi A8 4.2 quattro daily

Figured I might as well show my new daily.

I was building a E39 recently, but I ended up parting it out. I needed a new daily. I wanted something with a V8 again and something comfy.

I definitely wanted something different than a BMW this time, since I had only owned BMWs for the past 8 years or so and felt it was time for a change. So, even though I know they are good cars, that removed the 7-series E38 from my list of possible cars.

I started looking at Mercedes W140 S-Classes but all the ones in my budget were toast.

Next, I looked at Jaguars but couldn't really find one that I really liked, mostly because of some small issues.

I started looking at different offers... I was never a big Audi fan but I figured the A8 might be worth a look. I went and test drove one, found that I liked it and so I set out to look for an A8.

Found one a few days later...

    It's a '99 4.2 quattro in Mingblau.

Comfy interior, black electric leather, heated seats, GPS, Bose hifi and more.

The previous owner already lowered it on 45 / 30 mm Lowtec springs. I'll keep those for the time being until I've got enough funds to go the air ride route.

    When I picked it up:

Just a few days later, I managed to score some new wheels for it.

Audi Speedlines in 9x19 ET33 with 255/35s. Nothing extreme, but they'll do the job.

In the pics I fitted them with 10mm spacers up front and 15mm in the rear. The 10mm in the front ended up rubbing, so I swapped them to the rear. Now I run no spacers in the front and 10mm in the rear.

Next thing was to get it converted to run on LPG fuel. If you don't know what that is, it's liqefied petroleum gas - basically a byproduct from gasoline refinery, if I am informed correctly.

That means it's really cheap and it actually burns cleaner than gasoline so it's even better for the engine and also for all the birds 'n trees 'n shit.

To give you an example, a liter of gasoline costs about 1.50€ here in Germany. Converted to something you US people might be more familiar with, that equals to about 6.40$ per gallon.

Now, LPG is way cheaper. Depending on the region, the price is between 0.50€ and 0.70€ per liter. So that means, at the cheapest, it equals to 2.1$ per gallon.

Second fuel filler (the smaller one)

Second fuel tank (this means that I have the stock 100l gasoline tank AND a roughly 90l LPG tank, so I can cover huge distances because you can switch from LPG to gasoline with the press of a button. It actually switches automatically to gasoline once the LPG runs dry.)

    And the fuel gauge.

Here's some rolling shots for good measure:

Next step will be some kind of exhaust modification, although the stock exhaust does sound rather decent, but it's a bit quiet for my tastes:

After that, I'll save up for air ride.

This will be a rather slow thread, as my E36 will get more important soon (starting on that as soon as I finish parting out the E39).

Interesting, this might be the first LPG vehicle I've seen on here.

On this side of the pond, LPG makes a lot less sense, as prices for gasoline are not dramatically higher than LPG. We had an LPG truck at a shop I worked at, and I think we figured it was an average of $1.00 USD a gallon less for LPG than for 87 octane, and with the 25% or so loss of fuel economy that comes with LPG, it never really added up for our use. It's always interesting to see how these things add up differently under different economic conditions.

EDIT: I say this and now I realize I somehow forgot your E39.

Bummer about the E39 I liked where it was headed, but I bet this turns out even better. Subscribed.

I heard about LPG being more expensive on your side of the pond, but I didn't realizie it was so expensive, relatively speaking. Dito on what you say, interesting to see how it is in other economic situations.

Like I said, anything happening to this car will be rather slow.
As soon as I am done with parting out the E39, I'll be buying a parts car for the E36 because I want to get it running ASAP, ideally in time for DMPD in September. Also kind of tinkering with a nother set of wheels for it...

As for the Audi, like I said I'll be going bags. Mostly due to the size of the car - even with the moderate drop from the lowering springs, the front bumper scrapes every where because it protrudes so far from the body. And even though it's not an expensive car by any means (I paid less than 5k € for it), it is still way too nice to permanently fuck up with static scraping it everywhere.

As far as wheels, I think I will stay with 19s, but try to fit the widest possible. I want to avoid fender modifications, mostly because the rear fenders already offer up some space due to how they have no inner lip and also because of being a bit intimidated by the all aluminum body.

I'm thinking maybe 10x19 and 11x19 with 255/35. From the basic calculations I did in my head that should fit without much hassle. We'll see. Definitely something multipiece and polished, of course.

I have to admit, this Audi is the first car I've had in a while that actually makes me go out and just go for a drive sometimes, with no goal in mind except for enjoying the road. Last time a car really made me do this, it was my E36... so, I guess this means good things for my relationship with this car, hah.

Just some new pics. Not much else is new, but the car is acting up a bit at the moment. The ABS keeps acting up and activating when braking from slow speeds to a stop. Checked the error codes and it says it's the front right ABS Sensor... gotta have a look at that soon-ish.

I'll try to get some tomorrow.

Currently, it has about 229.000km - so about 11.000 to go until I need to replace the timing belt, heh.

I bought it pretty much two months ago with 223.000kms.

This looks really damn good. I've always liked this generation a8, whenever I think of these, I think of the BMW e38.

Where I'm at, propane price per gallon= one gallon of 87 octane gasoline give or take a few cents.

Fuck man, LPG cars are so cool. I bet you that hank hill would drive one every day if he knew about them.

I decided not to bag the car after all... I'll rather use that money to buy a proper project car once my E36 is done, hah.

                    Anyways,

the Audi Speedlines were nice and all, but I'm selling them. Mainly due to being annoyed at how much they suck for cleaning and also that one of them is slightly bent and vibrates...

Also, I as at an A8 meet the other day and decided that I want 20s.

So today I picked up these:

Startech Monostar III in 9x20 ET35. Rears will get a 10mm spacer (it's on the pics already). Tires will be 245/35/20, those should close the remaining wheel gap a bit as well. Also will need wobble bolts as the Audi is 5x112 and the wheels are 5x114,3.

Photoshop says, this is how it should look:

Still waiting on wobble bolts, spigot rings and tires.

                        So,

my hood had a tennisball sized dent from the previous owner.

Lucky me - a guy not far from me was breaking an A8 in the same color. So I quickly snagged up the hood!

Holy shit. I always wanted an A8 and the 90L fuel tank was a big plus for me. But with 190L of fuel on board that thing must drive forever. I'm digging the new wheels, they're subtle but far from boring.
