  • Just a wagon on air. But not that kind...

Figured I'd put together a build on this little project since I'm spending so much time on it at the moment. Not the Avant/Touring kind of wagon, but of the Flyer variety. Gotta teach my kind about Lowness from the start
The "LoFlyer" thing is pretty popular these days, I see a couple at every car show, so when I built one for my best friend's kid a couple years ago, I wanted to up the game a little from the usual flipped axle and fancy paint type thing, so I did this little box frame deal.
    Before:

    After:

Then I found out I was having a child of my own, so naturally I had to up the game again to make sure my friend'd kids didn't have cooler shit than mine. So first step was finding a donor. I'm not paying $100 for a new one, since I'm throwing half of it out, and these things are surprisingly hard to snag off CL around here, so I spread the word, and eventually my parents called with a barn find. Literally, they were cleaning out an old relatives place and found this guy half buried in the woods behind the barn:

Next came the concept. Since I love me some low, the logical upping of game from the static slam was to go airride on this bitch. Yeah, this has also been done before, but whatever, it's hella cool. I wanted to make sure the thing not only laid frame, but could also pull right, and support the weight of all the on-board hardware plus a kid and at least a small cooler of beer. So full independent suspension, four beefy air cylinders required. Basic design, made during a particularly boring meeting:

I'll load up more during pics later today, this thing got aired up for the first time last night, so it's on track to be ready for SoWo!

Thanks guys! Slow day at the office, means plenty of time for uploading pics and posting on SW

First, tacked up basic frame rails:

Next, solid front axle. I started making the spindles etc on the last wagon, but then i found out you can get a sweet set of weld on go cart spindles for around $25 off ebay, so I sourced those.

For the front I went for a four link with the straight axle. Keeps the steering geometry constant/ easy to make.
        Mounting spot for top links:

Teeny tiny tie rods! These use 1/4" heims joint and 3/8" tubing. yes, they are R/L threaded so you can adjust them like proper links.

        Front end:

In the back I did a kind of box to mount independent control arms:

        Because camber

All for now, updates in the works

Tacked up mounting points for the air cylinders

            Rears:

Some sexy rat rod tower bracing:

Gotta put together a secure mount for the on-board air, using Nitrogen

and there you have it so far!

Had to grab a new can of C25 for the big welder, everything is just tacked as of now, but hoping to have some time this week/weekend to finish front bracing, mount the cylinder, extend the handle (it's crazy short, what, are these things for kids or something?), and do some of the final welding. stay tuned for pics and hopefully an operational video in the near future!

put together the switch box.Since there's no electrical system, everything is pneumatic. Means push button valves instead of actual switches, so the box has to be a bit larger:

Got back on it this weekend, and the Flyer is on the road! Couple tweaks here and there, and eventually I'll tear it back apart for paint and some finish work, but everything is working as hoped so here she be!

                        Few aired up shots:

                        Draggin' ass

                        And maximum slammage

                        Grandpa and Baby approved!

Cause families that stance together, stay together

Wagon is getting strapped to the roof of the VeeDub Thursday and headed south, look for us at SoWo!!

First let me start by saying this is flipping epic, that said I'd like to make a couple suggestions, maybe mount the switch box near the pull handle that way you can control it while pulling, also you could use some piping for the pull handle instead of rod and run a lot of the plumbing inside the pipe to the controls (under the lip of the bucket rim from rear to front) so it looked tidier. Front could use a lot more low to match up with rear on full drop. These are things I'm hoping you address before paint, either way I'm tuned in and this is sweet!

Good points, I actually do plan to move the controls up front and rework the handle/ all the tube, though ultimately the passenger will get the switches instead of the puller
