  • FAT GIAC's BMW E46 320D COMPACT...

This week Ive obtained my first BMW, its a BMW E46 320D Compact. The car cost me £0.00 (Happy Days)... however the log book set me back £25, its currently sitting on AC Schnitzer type 4's. The only downfalls are that the turbo has decided to implode and drown the poor engine in oil and the slight cosmetic damage such as a cracked front windscreen. I picked up the car on Friday (yesterday) and have already fired her up and now I've started to dismantle the engine. I've already ordered a turbo which was second hand costing only £105 inc. P&P with 90 days warranty , PMW's 22mm swirl flap blanking plates which cost £24.18 inc. P&P & also an Allard EGR race pipe which cost £74.50 inc. P&P... All the parts should arrive on Monday.
    Total: £228.68
She's gonna be a long build as she does need work so i think it'll be a while before she's finished... (especially with my OCD).

    FAT GIAC's BMW E46 320D COMPACT...

With a quiet weekend due to the "impeccable" weather of "Great" Britain, only small progress was made on the removal of the blown turbo of the E46. With the engine covers, the air box and air filter, the inlet manifold and various miscellaneous parts removed only a few bolts remain until the turbo can removed however their location being rather difficult find. With the arrival of PMW's 22mm swirl flap blanking plates, the Allard EGR race pipe and turbo only being one more sleep away, I had a chance while being shielded from the "best of Britain's" weather, the classic cocktail of slight drizzle with the off chance of a soaking and harsh cold winds, enough to erect any brave mans nipples, to dismantle the inlet manifold, removing the four swirl flaps, their actuator and the bar which connects them. I also removed the EGR valve and the sensor along with the various gaskets and washers of the manifold. The manifold itself was covered on the inside with a mix of recirculated carbon, oil and dust, so I've cleaned the manifold, and now, I just have to wait until tomorrow...

        FAT GIAC's BMW E46 320D COMPACT...

So far this week has been quite disappointing. Only small progress has been made as the elusive bolts are yet to reveal themselves... However the majority of the parts have arrived, and they look mint! For a second hand turbo it's in emasculate condition (touch wood, it'll be fine), and as for the PMW's 22mm swirl flap blanking plates, their finish is outstanding! and their build quality is prefect. whats disappointing is that the Allard EGR Race Pipe which I had ordered is currently unavailable as, Allard seem to be having mechanical difficulties, so I have asked for a refund and will enquire before I go back to university.
I have however purchased a Gold Plug (AP-11), for those who don't know, a Gold Plug is a must have!... its simply a sump plug with an extremely strong magnet which attracts small pieces of metal which are present in the engines oil. It's slightly expensive for what it is, however, i think it'll be a worth while investment, it set me back £18.54 inc. P&P.
        Total £247.22
I have also be having a ganders on the internet regarding BMW short shifters, I have decided to go for either a BMW Z4 3.0 or Z4 2.5 shifter?
I also have been thinking of obtaining a different set of wheels, and so I now need to sell the AC Schnitzer type 4's... I've decided to go for Borbet A's 17" with stretched NANKANG NS-2 Sport, 205/40/17.

          FAT GIAC's BMW E46 320D COMPACT...

So with the half decent weather these last couple of days, I had decided to finish changing the turbo. A tip for anybody who might need it, "It was much easier to remove the turbo with access from the underneath". Now with the turbo fitted all that is left to do is reassemble the various parts which I had dismantled.
I have ordered a set of MAHLE filters, one air, fuel, oil and pollen, setting me back £66.99 inc. P&P.
          Total £314.21
I have also received my refund from Allard, but will enquire again about the EGR Race Pipe before I return to university, as I am still to find another product built to their quality.
Total £314.21 minus the £74.50 refund brings the total to £239.71
I have also had a ganders on the inter-web and have found two intercoolers one also produced by Allard Aluminium costing £449.99 and the other produced by AIRTEC costing £340.00. Both are of the same build quality, only one is significantly cheaper.
Also as for the wheels I have changed my mind, I'm now on high alert for a staggered set of AZEV A's...

              FAT GIAC's BMW E46 320D COMPACT...

Today I've attempted to start the BMW for the first time since the replacement of the turbo. The engine is turning over however it's not starting, I have noticed that when I turn the ignition on, the temperature gauge is showing that the temperature is at the highest that the gauge can show, although the engine is cold and hasn't even started?
I also had to purchase various nuts and bolts which either misplaced by myself, missing from the beginning or completely different to the OEM part. In total I had spent £6.50.
              Total £245.21
I will attempt to start the car again tomorrow, with the assistance of my uncles diagnostics computer, hopefully this should help find and resolve the problem?

Finally... today was the day on which the BMW finally started, and it sounded b-e-a-utiful! However it's a tad smokey... after taking it for a little drive, its evident that the smoke will go in time.
I have also ordered a Z4 2.5 shifter, which is an OEM short shifter, it set me back £52.00 inc. P&P and a genuine BMW leather gaiter which cost £10 inc. P&P.
                Total £307.21
I have also been in contact with Allard and they have confirmed that they can now produce the EGR Race Pipe for the BMW.
