  • More Poke than Tuck S50 E36 Compact

Newbie from across the water in Scotland, Thought i would share what i am using this year for Drifting

This is where it is at right now

So having seen this 318ti compact come up close by and it was a decent price with a long ticket on it jumped in the truck and collected.

I already had its new heart sitting in my container, Driftworks BDC driver Richard Grinrods 3.2 evo engine from his m3.
Car was fired down to my mates on the border and engine was put in. Conversion was easy enough only sticking point was the ecu as far as I was aware it was already ews deleted but couldn’t figure out why the car would start but kept cutting out. Up to my mate Gaz who is a wiz on ecu’s and a few hours later it was alive.

Now that the engine was running mint, it was time to concentrate on getting the car to a point of being able to do a skid.

Choice of diff for this one for now was my 4.44 out one of my old compacts, ebay coilovers I had sitting, Hydro fitted and threw in my track culture seat and a harness and went and had a play 

Now that I was happy with the running of the car it was time to take it back off the road and the build could begin

Up step Kyle @chizfab being good friends and neighbours with my bodyshop next door car was booked in
    Spec list till now
    : Standard body 318ti compact
: interior stripped, track culture bucket seat
    : Sparco Harness
    : 4.44 welded diff
    : ebay coilovers
: pair of front schnitzer 17x8.5j
    : cut hubs
    :20mm spacers
    Chizfab hydro

Work the car was going into chizfab for:
    Interior:
    : 2 x Cobra evolution S seats
    : driftworks seat frames
: genuine Nardi Deep corn leather steering wheel with Driftworks quick release
    : Storm Gearknob

    Drivetrain:
    : Full car polybushed
    : Front crash bar fabricated
: mocal oil cooler relocation behind the crash bar
: SLR ultra angle steering kit (first one in the uk)
    : BC coilovers
: Diff mount changed from single mount to twin mount and the 4.44 diff backing plate changed to match
: Aust fab rear self centering main bush
    : Braided brake lines

    Exterior:
: Custom Fabricated front wings to make the most of the Angle the steering kit gives
: Rondell skid wheels which I have painted 17x8.5j and 17x10j
: Oz futura wheels all polished 17x8.5j and 10j
: rear arches flared to within an inch of their lives

Basically that’s where the car is just now, plans over next couple of weeks is to find time to get it back into my shop and do the following……
: Full paint in Laguna Seca
    : BN rear window spoiler
: e46 csl rear boot spoiler modded to fit e36 compact bootlid

I am competing in the GFH street legal competition end of May so plan is use car for that then back off the road to get cage fitted and few other bits. See how the year goes and will freshen up all the underside parts with a fresh powder coat

A little bit more of an update its back on the ground and back in my bodyshop to make a start to the bodywork and get some fresh paint. Then its drift time! will be plenty of vids

            **** update time****

Well things have not gone as planned last few weeks. Got home from the rigs, only thing holding me back with the car was the oil cooler fittings, had nothing but issues so replaced the Mocal Cooler I had previously bought and bought another.
Once that was in and car was ready to go for test skids to see how we were for clearance. Myself and a few of the lads from Duncan business park decided to have a Friday funday of skids at Driftland as it was also Jeeks birthday.
Pics of the car looking well multi coloured! I couldn’t find a way of fitting the car in to my shop for paint and best to try it for clearance first in case any damage to wings etc.

Out on the first laps car was great never been in a compact that felt so planted to the ground. SLR Ultra nothing but incredible is only words I can say. Small negative was when on full full lock it had a bit of wheel wobble only slightly(possibly down to the very wet conditions)
Due to it being so wet I was surprised how much grip I got, car was picking up speed on drift really well. It felt like a different car after all the work.
Didn’t like my seats Cobra Evolution S may be good seats but the wrap around was giving me sore shoulders trying to change gear. So not keeping them plus a few extra pounds on of late made them TIGHT!
            Then total disaster struck!!
One of the lads that was there with us for the day was coming out for a few passenger runs but as he is building a similar compact said have a go yourself. Into his first lap and when on limiter car looked silly slow, Kyle could here something but couldn’t put his finger on it, so Kev was waved in. Gutted is an understatement, my decent spec s50b32 bottom end was knocking  just bad luck and defo not kevs fault.
So after wanting to put a wheel gun through the window and get the car out my sight it was chucked on the truck and back down to my unit. Then drank a large amount of beerrrrrr

Kyle from Chizfab is looking to inspect the damage later this month. In the meantime another engine would need to be sourced as I am entering the gfh street legal middle of May and my car was supposed to be ready in plenty of time,. Massive spanner in the works! I have picked up my old m50 engine which has not been used since I sold it so know its reliable. Quick engine swap at some point when I get back from offshore and will just have to enjoy the noise of the 2.5 rave limiter for the next few months till we see what to do about the 3.2

That S50b32 has to be pretty fun with the tiny car. Get it back up and running to go sideways again.

Well been over a month since I updated this.

Being honest two weeks ago I was going to pull the plug on the whole build as the passion and heart had been ruined when my 3.2 engine started knocking after 4 laps of testing the car.....

BUT... Last Wednesday Kyle at Chizfab hq went with the decision to get the car built to be used so my old Jumanji weapons m50 2.5 was brought round on the pallet and put in. Within 2 hours the car was up and running. Epic work from Kyle and the team
                  Spec:
                  Standard m50 2.5 engine
Single paddle clutch and box from the m3 engine
S50 manifolds off the the m3
Ecu rev limit raised and ews deleted

Now we had a running engine and looking I would be competing in the garage Fu*k house street legal! Better get the rest of the paint done so Friday and Saturday my lads put in an epic shift in to get the paint done

So Sunday morning we rocked up at Driftland having driven the car up it's the most it had moved under it's own steam since engine went in.

Felt decent slight miss on limiter second and third gear felt so slow but it was getting used however it went.

Practice runs in the morning the car felt fine. Running the 17's was a bit if a gamble as the power wasn't really there and suffered from too much grip, too late to do anything about it. Qualifying my practice run felt mint then my two judged runs I wasn't feeling it. Many clutch kicks I still couldn't get it together. Only thing I had going was I had hit all but one clipping point.

Was nervous sitting waiting to hear if I got into top 16 of the 42 drivers as a lot of good drivers and didn't think I had done enough... But.! I just scraped in at 14th place was mega delighted and basically that was me I had gotten what I had hoped for and anything else would be a bonus.

Ended up getting knocked out at top 16 by the eventual winner but the fact I had my car running and was out drifting I was stoked

Car is now back in my yard and a decision on what I am going to do going forward with it will be made at some point, Kyles thoughts are vanos solenoid so will try that and see.
My s50b32 is booked in end of July with James at Reddish to get rebuilt.
