  • C126 AKA Uncle Phil

So I lost my job and have been in depression. What better way to make myself happy then to work on an old vehicle. I have owned and destroyed numerous mk1 volkswagens. Also have owned a couple w124's
PICS OF A COUPLE PREVIOUS CARS:

. I was searching Craigslist one day in search of a beater car. i came across an ad for a 1982 560sec. When i went to look at it i saw the potential and i visioned a new project for myself.
Being unemployed at the moment. I really had to pull things together and be on a super budget.
    On to the pics:

The day i picked it up.

IT had sat out in the sun for a while. The owner says he hadn't driven it in months.
Of course i saw the true potential in the vehicle. Of course alot of things were falling off. Interior dry and dusty. The first thing i could do with it was to wash it of course.

After washing it i was happy to see that there was actually a car underneath all the dust. Of course after looking all online. Not many people have really "stanced" the c126 chassis. Although there are a million pictures on google images. All the pictures were definent inspiration to go lower. So the very next day. i took the suspension apart and had to put it on the ground. I cut the spring about 3 in the front and 2 in the rear. The rears were a pain in the butt to get to. Pry bars and feet definently did the trick to get the springs out of the rear.

Now Stuck in a position with no money and not much else to work with. I really didn't fancy the wheels on the car. Inside the trunk came all four orginal wheels that came with the car. I felt that it was more period correct and also a very tasteful "mod" if you want to call it that.

A buddy of mine hooked me up with brand new tires in trade for the wheels that were on the car. i didnt really need the wheels so why not right? So i put the tires on and am happy with how it came out.

After getting the car running right and with new tires. It was still very dusty on the interior and also very dingy. I got in touch with a friend that owns Flawless Finish in Richmond, Va and he gave me a great deal on a good detail. He really made the car look awesome.

He also did a great job in getting the paint back on the car as well. Although i need to paint the hood and roof. He has used his expertise in the bringing the rest of the car out. Even the engine bay looks amazing.

In the future of course i am planning on getting some nice wheels no smaller than a 10 in the rear and no larger than an 8 in the front.
Before those things, I am going to bring this bad boy back to life. I plan on replacing all wood trims, getting a vintage wood grain steering wheel, or replacing the steering wheel button with the old school wooden horn button. Also replacing the windsheild. Getting a respray of reflexsilber metallic. First and foremost to get the engine refreshed and ready for daily use. This car is a start and go and runs very strong suprisingly being that its over 30 years old. I really appreciate you taking the time to look at my build so far. Even though its far from a show car. I love doing this as a hobby. Stay tuned for any updates.

Since it turns out you have an early M116, keep an eye on that timing chain. Pre-'83 M116s are notorious for snapping their chains, sometimes at very low miles. For a while there, MB was paying to repair snapped chains, but I have no idea if that program is still going on. There is supposedly an upgrade to the dual-row chain that came out in '83, which is the only thing that fixes it for real.

Thanks man.. It is awesome to drive. Even with the cut springs. It drives like a dream. Barely any bounce besides on huge bumps. Other than that it just floats.

I really hope it turns out well. I have an interview with the Service Manager at Mercedes tomorrow. Wish me luck. I hope i get the job. Not only to be able to work on the cars. But to get parts at a discounted rate lol.

My next objective tomorrow is to order Bilstein rear struts. Just to stiffen it up a bit in the rear. Only 65 dollars a pair on Rock Auto.
