    Rabbit update.

I got tired of the boring, plain black interior with silver accent. It feels so... Germanic. And not good, like Mercedes-Benz, dignified luxury Germanic. Like, well, base-model Volkswagen Germanic. Utilitarian.

Started by removing the trim from the dashboard and doors. Only broke one clip, too.

Measured the pieces to figure out how much vinyl I would need.

I didn't want anything with too predictable a pattern in case I fucked up the alignment. So I went all Bentley and got some knotted wood.

First piece done versus the old silver.

    Another shot.

This is what the process involved. I'll elaborate more later.

    truth.

dumb overexposed shitty picture with my phone.

    more overexposure

even the little bits are important

    still overexposed

    way better.

I'll get a better picture of it tomorrow but this is how it ended up.

Okay so I've been trying to watch my finances this year so far and not spend so much damn money on... everything. But I've been wanting to change out the damn trims in my car for a while. I decided to say fuck it and just do it. The reason why this is relevant is because once I figured out what size I needed, I started looking for 3M DINOC and then I saw some VViViD vinyl on eBay. I found VViViD's website and everything looked pretty legit so I went ahead and ordered some. For about 1/3 the price of the 3M stuff. $15.

The vinyl itself is actually very nice. It's thick and sturdy, more like a plastic sheet than your typical vinyl but I chalk that up to it being a printed graphic and not the single color vinyls I'm used to dealing with (decals, etc).

The adhesive has a pattern on it that allows air to escape so it doesn't form bubbles... that shit works. Fucking well, too.

The process was this. Lay trim down on sheet of vinyl. Cut out section. stick to front of trim. Go out to garage, heat a little section and fold/work it around the trim a little at a time while trying to avoid burning the fuck out of my fingers. Which happened a few times.

The corners were a bitch. I had to basically heat and stretch the vinyl over the corner and try to fold it over without getting creases. It was difficult but I got it done well enough that you won't see any of my fuck-ups unless you remove the trim.

Overall it was pretty arduous, took me a pretty solid 2-3 hours. Still, I am pleased with the vinyl I used and very pleased with how it came out. I can't wait to see how it holds up.

Also worth mentioning is that Wolfsburg edition Jettas came with woodgrain trim from the factory... These are hard to find aftermarket and several hundred dollars from VW, plus they didn't make any 2dr versions. I haven't seen another 2dr mk5 with woodgrain trim like this so it's a nice, quasi-OEM+ modification that I feel like I'm gonna be unlikely to see elsewhere.

well I'm poor as shit but wanted to make progress so I did what anybody on coilovers would have done.

let the adjusters all the way down. still has the rear adjusters in and the helper springs on. still rides just fine but it's like an inch and a half lower now which is nice. now I just need wheels or spacers, either or.

I remember seeing somebody else do this to their BMW I think so I said fuck it and did it too.

Took the BFI shift knob off, disassembled the Logitech joystick and modified the grip a little to fit. Wedged it down in to place and screwed the halves back together.

It's sturdy enough, about as sturdy as you'd expect a early 00's joystick grip *to* feel. But it feels fucking badass, like I'm the goddamn Wing Commander.

A not so small part of me wants to wire up the trigger to my high beam, and one of the thumb buttons to my horn.

I hope it holds up, but if it doesn't, I'll just have to find another busted ass joystick on eBay or something and modify it to make it sturdier first.

I got a new digital camera and took some pictures.

Most of them are shitty, this one was okay though.

Built an intake. It was easy.

            1. Remove big dumb stock airbox/engine cover.
            2. Install 3" coupler, 3" pipe and filter.
            3. Laugh like an idiot at your new found 5 cylinder growl.

Took me under an hour to make. The vast majority of which was cutting the intake pipe to size. Car is an '09 so no MAF, no care. Runs great, way louder, sounds fucking rad.

Kicker CompVR. I literally found them in the middle of the street driving home one day.

I loved the joystick knob too, until that motherfucker came off. Bangshifted it from first to second to pass some broke-ass caddy and it popped off in my hand. I've been debating putting it back on pr seeing if I can make it sturdier. I like it better than my BFI knob (sorry BFI) but it's just not that sturdy.

Wiring up the buttons to something would be so bitchin. I'm thinkin thumb buttons for the horn? Beep, beep motherfucker!

So since the joystick shifter popped off, I figured "let's class the joint up a bit".

No, wait, that's the opposite of what I did.

Thanks man! I've put christmas lights on my car every year since I started driving, though doing it on the VW fucked off the paint on the hood. So I think next year I'll figure out a different way to do it versus the wreath.

I seriously can't recommend that stuff enough, it's a bit of a pain in the dick to work with but the result has been awesome. There is a tiny bit of bubbling on one of the trims but it's nothing too major, and if you didn't know it was vinyl, you'd never know.

I'd like very much to see some daytime pictures of the woodgrain vinyl. I'm sort of philosophically opposed to faux finishes, but I've got to admit, those vinyls are getting better every generation.

                                sure man, no problem.

aside from the very minor bubbling on one and a weird edge or two, you literally can't tell. I only know about those flaws because I'm the one responsible for them.

I'll get some with the nice camera so I can do some color correction and so you can see the detail.
